I notice that on mine, the positioning of the included tv antenna is very, very, very finicky. I also don't know how to "add" a new channel other than to hook it to the big house antenna and pick "re-scan" (or auto-scan or whatever it's called).

So I think your best bet is to pick a better antenna or know that even the tiniest fiddling with the antenna makes a diff. Sometimes, I even have the antenna horizontal (using the magnet) to get the good reception on a given channel. Seems like a hassle except that what should I expect from a tiny antenna....

Do I need a digital converter box & antenna to get

It really depends upon your TV. If your TV is newer and has an ATSC tuner in it, then no - you'll just need the antenna. However, if your TV is older and doesn't have an ATSC tuner, you'll need an external tuner, what you're calling digital convertor, and an antenna to get the local channels. Use Google or another search engine to find the specifications for your TV to see if it has an ATSC tuner. Or, connect an antenna to your TV, run the channel scan (off-air antenna mode) to see if you get any local channels. If you don't, you'll need the external tuner.

Is jvc av-32d503 digital ready or do I need to buy a converter box for use with an outside antenna system

Looks like you'll need a converter.

Here's some background info:

Analog TVs were made up until 2007.

Digital tuners for over the air signals are called "ATSC tuners".

To tell if your TV has one:

-If the TV was sold as a "HDTV" or "DTV", it's supposed to have an ATSC tuner built in to it. "HD ready TVs" do not have a digital tuner.

-Check the specs in the owners manual or google the make & model of the TV to see if it has an ATSC tuner.

-If your TV's menu has an option for scaning for digital channels, then it has an ATSC tuner. If it dosen't have a way to scan for digital channels, then it doesn't have a digial tuner.

Most DTVs also have a digital QAM tuner that is used in some (but not all) cable systems.

I only get 3 channels--and none of them I want! Does this TV only work with a cable attached? Which doesn't make it portable!

If you live in the US and the TV doesn't have the newer ATSC (digital) tuner, you're lucky to get 3 channels! The only analog broadcasts left in the US are "low power" & "translator" stations. The old NTSC analog tuners in TV's from just a few years back have little to tune since broadcasters have been moved and changed from analog to digital as directed by the FCC in 2009.

I hope this helps & good luck. Please rate my reply. Thank you.

Most HDTVs have ATSC, QAM and NTSC (analog) tuners. It sounds like yours does not have an NTSC (analog) tuner. QAM tuners only pick up digital cable channels. You may need to switch to your cable company's digital service if your not already on it. Call your cable company for further info

Vhf is not picking up signal, no image

Well since all TV is now broadcast in High Definition that might be why you are no longer able to tune in a station. You will need the converter box.

No Channels

First check to make sure your coax cable is in the correct slot, (Make sure it is plugged into the outside port). The other port on there is the ATSC antenna which would only be useful for over the air broadcasts if your area has them (I believe Omaha, NE would be able to get KETV over the air)and if you have an applicable antenna. You are using the proper format (NTSC_M), if you are using the WinTV application, on the upper left side of the screen you will see your channel up/down buttons, in-between them is an addition button for video source, try changing this to see if you are able to scan more channels. My initial reaction is that you are using the ATSC tuner for scanning the channels. I will check back frequently to check for more information for you.
