The HS50EXR will only error stop recording in two scenarios, the SD card isn't fast enough to keep up with the camera, or the SD card capacity doesn't have enough space to continue.

The SD card should be a SDHC class 6 or higher card. Class 10 U1 or higher is best. Because the camera doesn't have a ram buffer, if the card it is recording to isn't fast enough to keep up, recording will stop. It is possible to purchase 16-128 Gb cards with no class rating and those should never be used.

Also the HS50EXR will only detect and determine card capacity based on function at the time of recording and not when the card is inserted. So after recording starts, it will test the card for capacity and speed and if neither are up to par, recording stops.

This may sound silly but in this same way it will read basically any card classed or unclassed as a media storage device and not a recording media. It's not until we need to use it will it run a quick test to see if it can continue. I know that is odd. It's as odd as find out this is their Cadillac model for the FinePix series but the tripod mount is PLASTIC!!! and the camera weigh over 650 gr!!!

Broken video management file/ recording failure

Although the instructions don’t make it clear, it seems to be important that the camera is turned off before you connect or disconnect the USB cable. The instructions do mention that you should not delete or rename files on the camera except in the EXT_MOV folder. The camera’s firmware is apparently quite fragile about file names and the presence of the extra hidden folders that both the Windows and Macintosh operating systems create when you delete something.

How Do I Make An MPEG Recording?

You can record video with audio onto the Memory Card. Follow the instructions below. Recording moving pictures onto a MEMORY CARD 1. Insert a Memory Card into the slot on the camcorder. 2. Set the mode switch to MEMORY CARD position. 3. Set the power switch to CAMERA mode. 4. Press the START/STOP button, the images are recorded on the MEMORY CARD in MPEG4. * You can record 10 ~ 20 seconds continuously. * You can record a still image on the Memory Card by pressing the Photo button instead of the START/STOP button. 5. Press the START/STOP button to stop the recording. Notes: * Moving images that you recorded are saved in *.asf file format on the Memory Card. * The moving picture images on a Memory Card are smaller size and lower definition than those on a Tape. * The sound is recorded in mono. * The following functions cannot be operated in M.REC Mode. - DIS (Digital Image Stabilizer), Digital Zoom, Fade, Program AE, Digital Special Effect, Slow Shutter. * Don't insert or eject a tape during Memory card recording as it may record noise. * Don't eject the Memory Card during recording as it may break the data on the Memory Card or the Memory Card itself.
