There may be a slight amount of end play in each rear wheel if rear wheel drive. This is normal axle end play with a solid axle. If the rear axles are CV joint type with a small differential, suspect a loose/worn wheel bearing/hub assembly
block front wheels and jack up rear slightly off the ground, keeping your body parts out of harms way you can grab and shake tires, if they move back and forth or in and out even slightly it is time for bearing work
As far as I know, the "spacers" you're talking about are actually "races" for the oil seals in the rear wheel hub to run on and they are the same length. It depends on the noise your brake is making as to the severity of the problem. If it's a small noise, it's probably common. Your rear wheel hub is set up to have just a bit of "end play" in the bearings. It must have this end play in order to prevent the wheel from locking up as the bearings heat up. It is set by a shim stack inside the hub. Due to this "end play", when you lean into a turn, the wheel moves a bit. Since disc brakes keep the pads against the rotor with a slight pressure, you will hear a rubbing noise. You could take the bolts that hold the rear brake caliper on and make sure they have a bit of synthetic brake lubricant on them so that the caliper moves in and out easily, floats so to speak. Also, if you have gotten any contaminant on the brake rotor like wax or something, this will cause the brake pads to squeal and they may even do it when you go into a turn. If the noise is really loud, do not ride the bike until you have it professionally checked out.
First, remove the front wheel and take it to a shop and have it computer balanced. On a mag wheel, the lead weights simply stick on and are notorious for coming off after a while. Make sure the wheel is balanced correctly and the "run out" of the wheel and tire is acceptable.
When you put the wheel back on the bike, check the wheel bearing end play. The book says that it should be between 0.004 - 0.018". I'd try to keep it below 0.010" in your case. Check the adjustment and "fall away" of the front end, tension on the steering head bearings. Since I don't have a manual for your year modelSportster, I must refer you to a dealer or authorized shop for this information.
Also. check the alignment of the rear wheel in the swing arm. The book shows the use of a straight edge place along side one edge of the front wheel to check the alignment of the rear wheel with the front wheel. Use a piece of straight angle aluminum.
Also, check your rear shock settings. A stiffer setting my help. If all else fails, there are places you can take your bike and they will check it on a frame jig to optimize the entire bike for proper alignment.
Rotate the wheel with bike on center stand and see if you feel any grinding or roughness. If you are inclined, you can drain the final drive oil and check for any large bits of metal that would indicate impending bearing failure.
I hate to say it but it sounds like you have a severe problem in the rear end. Here are a couple of things i would do. First pull off your tires and wheels. Of course you need to put the truck on jack stands and block the wheels for safety! Disconnect your rear drive line so you know nothing from front diff or trans could be affecting it. Next spin the brake rotors by hand and inspect them for severe damage. Go forwards and backwards. Also listen in your rear end for grinding or clunking noises and also excessive play front foward to reverse. And last drain your oil and put your finger up inside the housing as far as you can and feel for large pieces that should not be there. This should give you a good idea if it is in your braking sytem your rear end or wether you need to start looking at front diff. or the trans. If all is good on rear end do the same thing for front diff and inspect it as well. Make sure you pull front driveline off!
Well the best thing to do id to put a block of wood 4x4" under the back wheels(Back and Front of tyres) and get someone to help you rock it with h/brake off , and see if the rear wheels stay still and the body moves slightly forward/back and if so then the bushes (Rubber) will need replacing, also check out the Uni/joints on the tailshaft for movement ( backwards/forwards/Left/Right) that will give you a good idear as to much play in either the bushes or tail shaft could give you the problem
