Someone may have reinstalled Windows software and removed the recovery partition. Only way to fix is to use a Windows installation disc to reinstall Windows..

This is how you put it back to Factory Settings...
1) Press and Hold the F11 key during boot.
If you are unable to get into Windows to start the recovery then you start the process when you first switch on the PC.
As soon as you turn on your PC, tap the F11 key on the keyboard until you get the "Windows is loading files..." message. When Recovery Manager has loaded click advanced options. Choose system recovery.
If you wish to try and backup any data then choose backup your files first and follow the on screen instructions. To run the recovery without backing up your data choose to recover without back up.
The recovery will launch and restore your system back to it's factory default state.

Restart the computer, press F9 during startup. In some PC's, it is the F4 key. This activates the hidden partition where your factory settings is saved.

If you press F8 just before the system boots, the menu system will let you recover factory settings if the partition has not been deleted.

I'm unsure if i need a restore cd to restore my notebook back to factory settings can someone please help me

Welcome to Fixya

You dont need to use the recovery disk. The machine has a built in recovery partition. Unless you re-partion the HD. Re-partitioning the HD will destroy the restore partiotion. Here's the procedure for the restore factory state:

Restart your computer and press F9 key when the computer is starting up. On some computer you can press the F4 key and you will be able to activate the partition that is set inactive. After that your computer will restart and you can restore the system as you like. Have a good one!

I have an Averatec 2370 notebook with Windows XP and I want to return it back to factory settings to give away. I press F2 for BIOS but I am unable to find a way to return it to factory settings. Any help...

What do you mean by "back to the factory settings"?
If you want the laptop back to when you first bought it then you need to format the hard disk and do a fresh Windows install plus install the device drivers for your laptop.

How do i restore factory settings on my samsung r40 i have vista installed. i have all the recovery discs

You should be able to get into a restore screen by:

1) Start by pressing F4 when the BIOS "Samsung" screen is showing.
2) From the screen that pops up a restore option with the recovery disc should be available.

It goes unsaid that you should back up all the data that you want to keep and make sure that if you have purchased software like Microsoft office that you have the license key as you will need it to reinstall a full version. If you dont have access to these license keys, I have used the following in the past:
