First, look for a release/disengage levr on rear o mower to disengauge trans and pull it out. See if you can now push or pull unit. Net, check shifter and follow shifter linkage to trans. There should be a pin holding this in place. I suspect your pin s missing, f not you will have to take nit to a qualified mechanic. Good luck.

If there is too much play in the drive belt due to belt stretch or linkage wear, the belt will be too loose to drive the tranny but still cause the tranny input shaft to rotate preventing it from being put into gear.
Do the gears grind when trying to put into gear? With engine off you should still be able to push the machine if you put it in neutral. Unless, of course it is a hydrostatic transmission, in which case there should be a lever to push/pull which will put the hydrostat in neutral. This is all assuming that it is a hydro and while running the machine won't move when putting the drive lever into forward or reverse.

It sounds to me like a very loose belt or very worn out belt and also an adjustment problem.

Try pulling on the cable coming down to deck. This cable might be your problem. Also check that the spring on the end of this cable is present and functional.

It is very likely that your belt is not on right. Check your manual to see it it is on right.

SOURCE: Craftsman riding mower won't move.

yes it is a bad belt unless it is a hydro-stat(no clutch) you need to look under the mower and see if the belt is on correctly

Craftsman tractor won't go into gear; had flat tire, got it fixed and remounted, now tractor won't go into gear

Not much info here on model and type. However, my Craftsman Tractor 46", 971.288520 with automatic transmission. On all these similar models, on the rear of the mower and the rear axle level, a small key-hole type opening exists that has a small diameter wire protruding with a 90 degree bend at the end. If you pull on this wire, it disengages the transmission so you can push the mower around for loading or other reasons. To reengage, just push the wire back in and transmission will again work. Only moves about an inch each way when pulled and pushed. This may have been hit while working on tire. Can also be use to prevent driving by others who do not know about the release. Another possibility that happens quite frequently with this model mower, especially when jacked up to replace wheels, tires or bearings, is the drive belt will drop down off of the drive pulley under the engine. Belt is loose when drive is not engaged. That is how the design keeps the mower from moving when you are "out of gear." So, loose is fine, but not up and around the pulley is not. The belt is held in place by a couple of "keepers" on each side so that it does not completely fall off. I have even had this happen when I stopped mower in yard, disengaged transmission to get off and pick something up. Kind of a goofy design, but cheap way to solve the disengage drive issue.

Manual transmission

The short answer, yes. M46 models with the type J or P overdrive (depending on year and market) require a certain level of oil in the overdrive. Additionally, the overdrive is a lot like a standard automatic transmission with one gear range in theory of operation. Therefore, the hydraulic properties of said transmission do come into play here, line pressure, shifting pressure, accumulator and piston function all work together to engage or disengage the unit. Always ensure the unit is disengaged before downshifting and of course, shifting into low reverse.

Sounds like your final drive belt is broke. Put the transmission in low gear with the engine off and try pushing the bike. If you can push the bike with the transmission in gear and the belt is not broke, it could be the front belt pulley is stripped in splined area where it goes on the countershaft. to check that take the rear master cylinder loose and remove the front pulley cover. Put the transmission in low gear with the engine off and push the bike. If the front pulley turns and the countershaft does not, the pulley is stripped.

Good Luck

There is a lever in the rear of the rider that allows you to disengage the transmission. It is intended to make the rider easy to push around. Make sure that hasn't gotten activated. The lever is usually located just above and to the right of the hitch plate (where a trailer would attatch). Sometimes it is located under the seat near the seat hinge. Hope this helps.
Good luck.
