Plextor px-708a will not recognize disks. Just removed a second DVD drive from the system and jumpered px-708a as MASTER. The system recognizes the drive; it just will not read.

as you've changed the configuration of the drive from slave to master you need to go into the bois and change the settings for the drive so that it reads the px as master cd drive

Go to and download the firmware update. If you have the 708A-UF model, make sure you install the firmware update using a USB cable. Using a firewire cable to do the update can cause a data corruption problem with the firmware update.

PX-708A Drive not working

This drive does not have power. First open the case and check power cable to make sure it is properly seated. If your power supply has additional power connections of that type, try swapping them (it is a 4 pin molex connector used for IDE hard drives and CD drives). You might want to use a multimeter to check the power output on those connectors.

If the power supply is providing sufficient power and properly seated, it could be the drive itself has failed. (The power is not getting past some part in the drive. I do not do CD drive disassembly so I don't know if there is a fuse or some ofher component that you should look for having been damaged.) With IDE DVD-R/W devices being available for $30 or less, it isn't worth the time to search. Replacing it with a new one is simple.

I hope this helps.

The plextor dvdr px 708a stopped working

Thanks for coming to FixYa, The problem you have is either a well documented software problem, corrupted plextor software or a failing drive.

Click the below link, then scroll down and click the "Fix It" button. Follow the onscreen instructions, restart when it's done and see if your drive re-appears. If it does, you're done, if it doesn't work then try re-installing the plextor software. Again if that doesn't work then your drive is most likely failed and you should replace it.

Hope this helps FixYa,

New problem old hardware

Right click my computer>properties>hardware>device manager>right click on your burner drive>properties>driver>uninstall. Go back to the device managger window, click on "action" and then on "Scan for hardware changes".Windows should recognize your DVD device by announce you about a "new hardware". In case it will happen and the problem will still exist : - Use a laser lens cleaner CD - Open your PC and check whether all connections to CD are OK (flat cable, power cable,Master/Slave jumper). Let me know with your results. Good luck !!!
