No vocal in mixdown

I'm trying to add vocal to a recorded song and then Mix it down so as to make a Master. I go into Mixdown mode and it does the Mixdown (I guess) but no vocal is in the product.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

May I ask if you have stored several songs on the unit? You may need to free some data or recorded songs for you to record a new one. If the files are all free but still you can't record then the problem can be on the unit itself. It may have reached it's break point and the only cure is a reset from the dealer.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

How to record with Multi-effects feature on Tascam DP 01

I'm not familiar with the Tascam DP-01 but many multi-track recorders don't commit effects to the track until the mixdown phase. The thinking being that you cannot eliminate a "bad choice" effect once it's down to tape (old school term) and so they allow adding the audio tweaks at the final stages of recording. Here they hope you can appreciate the entire mix and then decide what sweetners to add.

MIDI isn't audio, think of it as a sheet of music. It still needs to be played to be heard. Not sure of your recording setup but the midi performance that you have needs to trigger a keyboard or drum machine or VST instrument of some sort.

How multitrack recording works is assigning each recording to a different track. A way around this is to record the vocals to track one, then your harmony to track two. Save that as a single recording, or mixdown, then open that saved mixdown to track one. You may need to be connected to a computer to do this.

I use the same technique when using Cool Edit Pro (outdated, yes, but I've been using it for 4 years, and I know most of the ins and outs), especially on the guitar tracks, where for studio sound, you've gotta use 4 total tracks. Putting two tracks together frees up your processor, and uses less in the way of effects, as well.

Hope that helps!

Ikeep getting an error message when i go to mixdown/matering.it says that my tracks are too short, change outpoint. How do I change outpoint and to what do i change it to?Song is 4 mins. 23 secs long.

The 2488 requires a start point and end point in order to master down. The start point, by default is zero (the beginning of the song) so you will NOT have to create one, HOWEVER, you MUST provide an end point. The end point is wherever you wish the song to end, so, roll the BIG wheel to the end of the song, then, press LOCATE SET and OUT simultaneously. You have just now marked your out point and thus it will master the whole song. NOTE: If your song is 4:23, then the out point will be/should be a bit longer (a second or two- or even more- that's up to you) than that depending on where the song/music actually begins after the zero mark, therefore, make SURE you roll the BIG wheel enough to encompass the WHOLE SONG. The counter will reflect the time/length as a result of how far you roll the wheel. I hope this helps. One last note, do ALL this at the MIXDOWN prior to MASTERING.

Altering an mp3 track

hi,

If you simply want to overlap the voice, you can do that by recording using any free softwares available on internet (just google free recording softwares)
you can try, cooledit as well, one track will contain your file with play mode, one track with record mode (for your voice)
then start recording, it will play the song simultaneously with recording your voice.
After then, you have to save the mixdown.

other long way is, you have to get KARAOKE for that song (karaoke means, no vocals only music track) then you'll get the recorded song in good quality.

Hope this helps.

Thanks.

Low Volume on CDs - Roland 2400 CD

Hey Rick, There are a couple of places to look; I'll assume you have a decent input level near -12db average without peaking. First, ensure during playback upper right meter labled MST is near peak without going over, if you have room push the master level above 0db to +1 thru +6db and recheck for peaks above 0db. (You never want digital recordings to hit above peaks, you lose quality or resolution of the sound) As you find the sweet spot, master rec to 23/24-16 using the elevated level on the master fader. The manual suggest editing and mastering with the master fader at 0db however if you don't compress your tracks individually or reprint them at higher levels, you may have a great mix at an overall lower volume, pushing the master fader should help for a quick fix, but if this cures the level issue, try compressing and leveling each track to peaks prior to the first mix only lowering tracks which are too loud, when you get to mastering, all your signals are at their top potential for the CD. Spend a few minutes burning samples at low, just below peak, and just above peak levels on separate tracks and playback in your boombox for reference to a commercial CD. You'll find little to no difference when you are in the sweet spot. Another trick is to mixdown to a separate pair of tracks (not 23/24-16) and compress again during master mixdown rec. (ultimately 23/24-16) Good Luck Jeremy Yates, Radio World LLC.
