What is GNU grub?

The Grand Unified Bootloader (GRUB for short) is a program developed by the GNU software foundation. This program allows your Windows machine to load a number of different operating systems by presenting the user with a choice when the machine boots. This allows you, for example, to have both Linux and Windows XP installed on the same machine. If you find that you need to restore your XP system to a previous state and want to remove GRUB from your Windows XP, the process can be done in just a few minutes.

Ensure that your computer can boot from the CD/DVD drive. Start your computer and watch the startup screen. It will flash the key combination you need to press to enter BIOS. Enter this key combination and go into the system BIOS. Look under "Boot Options" or "Boot Order". Select "Boot from CD/DVD Drive" and make sure that it is listed as the first in the boot order. Save your changes before you exit the BIOS. Open the CD/DVD drive and insert your Windows XP install DVD. Reboot your system. Press "R" for "Recovery Console" when the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears. Enter the administrator password. At the prompt, type the following command: fixmbr Allow the XP system to recover the boot sector. When finished, it will return you to the command prompt. Type:exit Reboot your XP system. Hope this helps.

How to remove an operating system in a dual boot?

In Windows Xp, you can install two operating systems on the same hard disk of one computer.

Whether you have two copies of Windows Xp, or two different operating systems, then you end up with dual boot machine when you restart your Windows Xp computer.

Dual boot means, the system will give you a choice of two operating system. For example, if you have two Windows Xp copies A ans B, the prompt will offer you to choose A or B to boot from.

Also, dual boot machine can be used to have Windows Xp, and Linux O.S. installed on the same computer.

In the case where you have two windows Xp copies on the same hard disk, you will experience a slow performance in your system.

If you need to delete one Windows Xp copies, and leave only one, here is how you do it:

When you restart your system, and you get a choice of two operating systems, you should choose the one you want to keep installed on your machine.

Once the startup process is done, and your computer is ready to accept tasks to perform certain functions, you click on the "My Computer" icon and locate the hard disks, removable storage devices, and more.

In the hard disk box you should see two drive icons, like "C", "D". If the copy you installed later need to be cancelled, it must reside on the "D" part of the hard disk.

This is because the "C" is where you initial copy of the Windows Xp resides, and it is the one you want to keep installed as the only copy on your computer.

The way you should get rid of the "D" copy is to format the "D" part of the hard disk. just right click it, and choose format. This will delete the Windows Xp copy you don't need.

In summary, you can have two operating systems installed on your windows Xp machine, which will offer a choice of loading one of two operating systems.

The good thing is that you can cancel one, and leave the other, and your computer keeps running.

Explorer, a key part of windows, isn't automatically loaded at boot. This is a sign of severe corruption - it's time to reinstall.

I have a hp pavilion 2120tx with windows 7 and i want to dual boot windows 7 and windows xp [windows 7 first]

You can create a Dual Boot in ur machine....
C: XP
D: or E: or F: as Win7

You need to re-format your disk, back up all critical data in your disk....
once done...boot with XP disk in CD drive....
after format, create multiple partitions....C: , D: , E: etc as per your preference
install XP in C:
once done...start PC and let the machine boot from C: XP...once you get Desktop in XP
install Win7 in D: or E: as prefered....once done..
in the startup screen you will get these 2 options
1 load earlier version of Windows
2 Windows 7
to make Win7 as default, right click on My computer (Win7), Properties / Advancd System Settings / Advanced Tab / Startup and Recovery / Under System Startup - Chose the Default OS by the down arrow and the time to it must be displayed in the startup to chose the OS....by this method you can chose Win7 or Xp to load...make your choice as prefered...

Can you tell me when the network driver in Windows gets loaded. I read some where that it does not get loaded until you get to screen in XP Pro. Is this true?

The network drivers do not load until you boot to Windows. I'm not sure what you mean by the XP Pro Screen but you have to be at the desktop level to have them load.

A good way to test when they've loaded is to go to your network connections after you're fully booted and right click on your connection. Choose properties. Check the box that says: Show icon in notification area when connected.

Two little computers should then appear in the right side of the system tray by the clock.

When you reboot, those will not appear again until the drivers have loaded.

I have just installed my first dual boot XP and Ubuntu on my old desktop. The floppy drive is recognised on XP but not on Ubuntu - What do I need to do to use it under Ubuntu 8 ?

Here are the steps to follow:

1. Click on "Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal".
2. In the terminal type "gksudo gedit" and enter the system password (you created this when installed Ubuntu). This will enable you to temporarily edit the "modules" file which is usually a read-only system file.
3. Click "Places -> Computer".
4. Click on "Filesystem".
5. Open up the directory (folder) called "Modules". It is the grey icon nearer the bottom of the list (you have to move the navigation bar down).
6. The file "Modules" should open in the "gedit" program.
7. It should look something like this:

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

fuse
lp

8. Now add the word "floppy" to the bottom of the file. It will now look like this:

# /etc/modules: kernel modules to load at boot time.
#
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

fuse
lp
floppy

9. Now save the file by pressing pressing the "save" icon.
10. Exit the "gedit" program.
11. Now restart ubunutu (reboot the computer).
12. After reboot is complete, the floppy icon should be found under "Places" on the panel. Click on it to open a floppy. Remember to "unmount volume" when you remove or change the floppy. Linux will not let you change floppies like windows by just popping it out.

Hope this helps!

How to install sound drivers

in safe mode windows uses minimum drivers to load. It just load that drivers that are neccessary to boot. so you can't see many drivers in safe mode.

If you find that your system is infected by virus, then you should run an antivirus. Or if you have all the setups of required software and drivers, you can make format and re-install.

thanks
