Sorry to hear ?
usually its the gasket . worst case a crack in the head.
if you can get your local mechanic have a look for you , he will be able to tell you the problem.?
some times a bottle of chemical weld can seal the problem. but its only a temporary fix . head needs to come of.
hope it works out, ?
good luck........

Definitely the gasket & possibly the head - the head has to be removed to replace the gasket, so it would be as well to have it checked when it's off.

My 88 Montero sport motor runs very hot but the temp gauge reads normal. Could it be a head gasket

run the fault codes to start with
next have the temperature SENDER unit check for correct operation
have a compression test done to check for head gasket/cracked head
check for coolant level at the radiator cap as the sender unit needs water around it to indicate properly or else it only reads the metal temperature that it is screwed into and may actually read a lot less causing you to burn the motor
I have experienced where the bottom plastic tank of a radiator has come off and the temp gauge went down with out going up that resulted in a burnt motor.

My grand am still overheats even after i changed the termostat and water pump plus, the fan only runs when the temp sensor is unplugged

I had the same problem with my 1999 grand am .I changed water pump, thermostat. I heard the Pontiac engines , 3.4 had overheating problems one is the intake gasket if your losing water but don't know were its going its leaking at the intake gasket and burning off or if you check the oil cap or the dip stick and theres a milky substance on them it would be your head gasket I had to change my head gasket and while I was there I changed the intake gasket too. I haven't had any problems sence I changed them hope this helps. Jack

My 2004 ford freestar with the 3.9L has been fouling out plugs with some consistency. they look to be oil fouled did compression test and they 1)195 2)200 3)200 4)205 5)200 6)205. any ideas od why they...

You need to have the rings replaced. Do the compression check again on a cold motor with this exception, add a small amount of oil to each cylinder. First do the test on the cylinder and record the pressure then add a small amount of oil and redo the test and compare the compression. I am attempting to identify if the problem is rings, valves or head gasket. I am concerned about cylinder 1. The compression is within range however the readings you provided indicate uneven compression. If after you add the oil the pressure evens out across the cylinders the problem is rings. If you get the same readings during both test the problem is the Head Gasket or a need to have a valve job done. The fouling is caused by oil getting past the rings or seals. Use regular oil in this test preferably in a hand oiler. Two to three squirts should be enough. DO NOT USE WD40 OR OTHER SPRAY LUBRICANTS. Those will damage your cylinder walls.

My engine ran hot, now i am told i need a new head gasket or a new engine?

unfortunately this is probably correct if the car got very hot.
most new cars have alloy heads and if the car gets too hot due to cooling problem the head can warp.
a new head gasket and having the head skimmed flat again is one solution, the other is a new engine.

if you want a second opinion then most garages will be able to do a pressure test on the cooling system which would confirm a blown head gasket

98 cherokee had gunky cooling system, got it flushed and temp gauge was reading low afterwards. diagnostic computer said the cooling system circuit had high input so i replaced one of the temp sensors. now...

STOP DRIVING.

Go to a shop and ask for a cooling system pressure test.

After they pump up the coolant system, they will point out is there any INTERNAL or EXTERNAL leak(s).

Internal leak is the first sign of blowing head gasket. (NOT GOOD)

External leak can just a small hose.

Start monitor cooling loss.

Start monitor the oil level

Change the thermostat and gasket.

The temp sensor is cheap. Change it at the same time.

Use 60/40 coolant mix is you has high odometer reading like 160,000+ miles

DO NOT ALLOW the coolant and oil cross mix.

As soon as it mix,you are ready for a majot head gasket repair.

Good luck.

Leaking oil put of tail pipe, is the cooling sensor important, head gasket blown how do you know

Never seen oil come from tail pipe (unless a piston has a broken ring or a hole burned in it.) Cooling sensor tells the computer the engine temp and the computer turns the fan on through the fan relay. Very important for it to work. A blown head gasket will make the engine overheat, can cause white smoke from tailpipe, coolant loss and extremely rough running. Also can cause coolant in engine oil or oil in radiator. What you may be seeing may be water mixed with carbon from the inside of the pipe. Excessive water coming form pipe is also a head gasket symptom. A compression test or cylinder leakdown test or a radiator hydrocarbon test will tell you if gasket has failed.

88 Bronco ii Coolant not circulating

Good Day,

Sounds like the thermostat is working properly, the only other cause for the valve/lifter noise could be the oil pump is not pumping enough oil up to the top of the motor. I suggest doing an oil change(if you haven'y aleready), be sure to flush several quarts through, after sitting for 5 years I'm sure the old oil is pretty sludgy, this well help rule out this possibilty. As far as the water pump goes, It either works or doesn't typically when they are on there way out the will leak from the gaskets. A bad head gasket would cause white smoke form the exhaust as coolant get's into the oil and is burned off, so I don;t hink this is the problem.

Here's a start for you, hope this helps and good luck
