Just recently my son's xbox 360 has been scratching his discs. The system is never moved nor is it mistreated. I still have the receipt for the stystem and was wondering what the protocol is for either a return, or for the system to be repaired. I had also read that the games could be replaced. The system was bought for Christmas last year, it's still under a year old. Please advise for the best and fastest result.

Re: x box 360 scratching discs
That is a very odd problem. Unless you have a special warranty, the unit will not get replaced for a new one until it cannot be fixed by a tech. You have to write or e-mail Microsofts contact in your manual and complain about the games getting destroyed by the Xbox. They may want to see copies of the receipts for the games too, but be very firm with them or they will not take you serious.
A 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.

If you have the new kinect xbox 360 dashboard and you cannot get your xbox 360 console to read your game discs or DVDs, you are not alone. An update that was recently applied through Xbox Live makes your discs unreadable. Remove the update by navigating to: System Settings->Memory->STOP HERE! You should see your Hard Drive highlighted, if not move to it and then enter this on your controller: X,LB,RB,X,LB,RB,X Delete System Update will appear, make sure there is no media in your disc drive and select YES. You system will restart and appear to hang DO NOT TURN IT OFF OR MESS WITH IT! After a couple minutes your system will start and you should be able to play discs again.
Most likely the Xbox was moved while the disc was spinning. The disc drive does not "lock" a disc in place, so any movement will cause the disc to move out of alignment and scratch the disc. Sadly, Microsoft will not fix the faulty drives.
A common problem that XBOX owners are reporting is if the console is moved during play, a whirring noise is heard and then when the disc is removed, very visible laser burn rings are found on the disc.
Laser burn, looks like complete or partial circular scratches around your disc, also known as “ring of death marks”. This occurs to discs when the games console has been moved whilst playing, from an upright to a horizontal position or vice versa or simply knocked against or the wires may have been just tripped upon. Discs are then impaired by a ring of laser burn, which is a circular scratch into the disc. Some home remedies may help with very light scratches on some discs but a professional disc repair service is usually required to repair any scratches or laser burn on discs. XBOX laser burn discs can be fixed!!!

If this laser burn scenario is consistently happening to your game discs especially if the console has not been moved or bumped against while the discs is in play, the games console itself may require repair. Check your garauntee and contact Microsoft for assessment and guidelines.
While disc scratching is known to occur if you move your XBox360 console from vertical to horizontal position while the disc is spinning or by bumping the console while the disc is spinning, there have also been reports that discs have become scratched when the console has not been moved at all. The official line from Microsoft is: "If you are experiencing scratched discs without moving your console you should contact 1-800-4MYXBOX for warranty support from Microsoft." Unfortunately, Microsoft will not replace your scratched discs for free. Instead, they offer a scratched disc replacement program with a charge of $20 per disc. To take advantage of this program go to the XBox website and search for "XBox Disc Replacement Program".
