Hard drive is not recognized on my computer now and just has a flickering blue light .The system is vista and when it was removed and another lacie hd i have it works on the power lead and usb lead that...

The flickering light signals that the internal controller board has failed. Unfortunately this is terminal, the external case is dead. If you're really lucky the hard drive inside it still has enough life left in it to allow you , when connected directly to a desktop, to copy all your files from it.
After that just junk it and get a new one.

ou have a usb controller board that is malfunctioning and it or the case for the usb hard drive needs to be replaced.
the power regulator that is built into the usb controller is not working therefore the usb logic circuit cannot transmit the signal to the PC viia the USB port and will not recognize the device. You can order or purchase a new case that will accommodate the hard drive from your local computer store.

I plugged my external hd into a diff electrical cord and it blew

I like the way you say "supposedly" normaly it is or isn't the same.
However , to the problem External hard drives contain a circuit board to supply the HDD with power and convert the signal from it to be used by a USB port. The Hard drive itself is exactly the same as the one in your PC.

Your external casing may be fried but the HDD inside it could be quite OK.

Usb devise not recognised

You probably damaged the drive from sudden disconnection of the signal line. I would suggest trying it on one other computer before considering it trashed.

I recently purchased an external hard drive, and how do connect it to my computer.

External Hard Drive is mostly of the USB interfacing type. If urs one is the same, then it is just as simple as plugging in a pen drive in the USB port. If it has external power supplies then u can easily figure out how to connect. There are two parts in the power supply (if external power supply cable is provided), 3-pin main power supply connector and other is the adapter which goes to the external hard drive.plug in the other end of the adapter into the hard drive (there is a hole in it). connect the main power cable to the adapter extension. now for the usb Hard Drive, connect the USB cable to the USB port of the computer. Switch on the power supply to the Hard drive and u r ready to use ur brand new External Hard Drive. If it is a Firewire interfacing one then u may need to open the CPU box, and then connect the firewire connector on to the motherboard firewire port. It is easy to identify, it is a red colored port/connector.

An external USB drive consists of tow parts:

a hard drive (usually a standard IDE or SATA drive), and

an enclosure

The enclosure is the box containing the drive. It also includes an interface to convert the data from the IDE or SATA interface on the drive to a USB (2) signal. Some enclosures include and internal power supply. The Freeagent has the power supply externally.

Hope that's what you mean.
