Question about Singer 3116 Simple
Will not go backward
There is a spring connected to the reverse lever, you need to open the machine up taking out the screws that hold the case. Hint:(Put all of screws and a paper and mark where you took them out so that you do not end up with extra screws). Now look at your spring, squeeze it a couple of times the squirt some oil on it. Now reassemble your machine and it should be good as new.

385 just means it's a Janome badged for Sears. The actual model number is the first 4 or 5 digits after the 385 portion.. like 385.1234567890
Machines that don't reverse are often dirty or the lubricants are gummed up (try running the machine in 15 minute bursts, full throttle, with the needle out; sometimes that helps.) Otherwise: https://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20091124135216AAUyR3H

SOURCE: backward stitching
Knowing which kind of machine you have helps alot. Just guessing but maybe the reverse mechanism is stuck and needs some oil in it to free it up. Or the buttonhole mechanism is stuck in reverse part of it.
Probably you should have it looked at.
