Singer 401

Hi Sara
If you don't have the manual for your Singer 401 you can find it online for FREE. Lots of people try to sell these but they are usually available somewhere online for no charge. Here is the link to the one I found:
http://www.ismacs.net/singer_sewing_machine_company/manuals/singer-401-slant-o-matic-sewing-machine.pdf
There is a section on adjusting tension for the needle by turning the tension knob. Sometimes you have to try a test run on a scrap of fabric. If it is too loose then turn the tension to a higher number, if too tight turn to a lower number. Probably start in the middle around 4 or 5 The bobbin tension is adjusted with a screw. Then manual has some illustrations. Hope this helps.

I have an old Singer Model 401 A. I love it, but tonight my thread is constantly breaking. What is wrong?

Brilliant that model, check all the basic things such as tensions and because of the age of the machine check the needle plate for any damage where the needle may have hit the plate at sometime and caused a burr, the hole in the needle plate may have also worn down over the years caused by the thread which a lot of people do not know about

Wiring a foot control pedal for Singer Slant-o-Matic 401G sewing machine, banana socket. The machines listed are newer models and my 401 is not listed.

Faboulous machine the 401 and the best machine ever made, in the UK if I remember the two red wires go to the right hand pin and thw two blacks go to each terminal, when you rewire the plug which is fidly undo the stop motion, when you plug the machine in if it runs on without touching the foot control change the two black wires over, to rewire the foot control there are only two wires, you can't go wrong.

I'm a newbie trying to learn how to sew on a 401 singer. My first problem is thread tension. Can't seem to get it right and the second problem is the bobbin won't sit right. I'm sure the problems are...

Are following these instructions? http://www.sewusa.com/Threading_Diagrams/Threading_Pages/Singer_Sewing_Machine_Threading/singer_401_threading_diagram.htm

Note: always thread a sewing machine with the presser foot up and make sure the bobbin thread is feeding from the bobbin as indicated in the manual.

Tension is usually around 4.

You need the right bobbin for this model: Class 66.
