If this is an electric typewriter it is the carriage return clutch on the right side of the machine the needs to be serviced & adjusted.

SOURCE: return sticks

Try putting a few drops of light oil on the shaft that the carrier rides on and the pulleys that the cables are on (WD40 works well) also look for debris under the carrier.

SOURCE: Carriage return problem

If it returns with the express key the latching mech. on the rt. side is probably gummy. Take off the case, get some WD40 and spray the mechinism that latches the ret on the rt. side below the platen.

Use your space bar to move carrier to desired location, hold down Alt key button on bottom left (next to space bar) and press the number 5 numeric key on top row. That should set your right margin.

To set margins and tad do the following: clear your margins in tabs using the steps above. Depressed space bar until you reach the desired left margin. Depressed the "L. MAR" key... you're left margin is now set. Depress the "space bar" until you reach the first required tab stop. Depressed the "tab set" key... your first tab stop is now set. Repeat steps 4and 5 for each tab stop required on the writing line up 13 can be set on each line. Depress the spacebar to move the carriage to the desired right margin. Depressed the "r. mar" key. Finally depress the return key.

Have an old Brother Deluxe 650TR portable that hasn't been used for a long time. The carriage will move but will not stay at the right margin after being returned. Any suggestions?

Does the carriage just move back and forth on its own? Space bar work? The escapement may be sticky from lack of use. You may be able to see it from the upper rear or the bottom. It will move when you hit space bar or keys. Try working WD40 into it, it'll take a bit of use to free.

Carriage Return Inconsistency

It has been a while since I have seen a #5 Underwood. I think I still have one hidden in the attic that the wife thinks was thrown out long ago :).

The carriage return is done by the lever that pushes a pawl. The pawl engages in the ratchet teeth on the LH end of the platen. If the typewriter has the half-space feature, then it has to roll the platen two clicks (teeth) for a line space. The problems were usually in two places when this didn't happen correctly. The first is that the bushings on the platen were dry and needed oiling. The second was the follow-up roller is not clicking into the ratchet tooth and keeping it latched in the proper position. Because the platen doesn't roll far enough, or is free enough, the roller stops on top of a tooth instead of clicking into the space between the teeth. This can be caused by dry platen bushings, sticky follow up roller mechanism, or weak follow up roller spring. If you roll the typewriter on its back with the carriage all the way to the left, you should be able to pull the carriage return and watch the follow up roller action from underneath (you may need a flashlight). A light weight oil (Marvel Mystery or a sewing machine oil or Triflow) will be suffiecient to fix it usually. Put a few drops in the bushing where the steel platen shaft goes thru the end of the carrier and a few drops around where the mechanism that attaches the follow up roller to the end of the carriage. Roll the platen back and forth to work it in then slide the carriage to the right and do the shaft on the other end and work it again. Hopefully that will take care of it. If it doesn't, then the spring will have to be tightened by removing a loop. Depending on your mechanical ability and tools, that can be an easy or difficult job.
I didn't mean to write a book on the subject. I worked on mechanical typewriters years ago and hated to see them go to the wayside. I usually don't do this, but if I can be of anymore help, email me :cautionflag1956 at yahoo

Hope this helps

The carriage keeps going back full force

Check that the carriage release levers have freedom are are not binding. Also the tab key and linkage, next the space bar mechanism. From under machine observe the escapement wheel, rocker and the escapement pawls (fixed dog and loose dog). Lubricate with 10 weight . oil only no WD 40). The loose dog is the part that holds the carriage in position by holding the tooth on the escapement whee wheel assembly. GOOD LUCK

I have a IBM Correcting Selectric II and I'm having trouble clearing out the margins. Can you help?

space to the right side of the machine, hold down the tab clear key and hit return.

If the carriage stops partway back, one of the tab stops has rotated too far on the tab bar.

remove the platen and paper pan, go to the stuck stop, rotate it to the rear of the machine to line up with the other tabs

How do you unlock a locked carriage?

The solution is not right--there is a carriage return release lever on the far right of the typewriter, that engages a notch on the underside of the roller/carriage return--push it forward to release the lever and you are in business--it has a spoon shaped end and its on the right side
