I have a vintage road bike with the serial number 2940058 that is stamped beneath the bottom bracket. I have not had any luck locating the type of bike which my cousin gave to me.

A bike is not "vintage" just because it's old, and ID'ing by serial number, especially one that is all numbers, is not possible without more info. Please see my Tip for more guidance:

Where is the serial # located?

Usually under bottom bracket (crank housing) or on outside of left rear dropout. Front of head tube may have a date code. Serial number is not very helpful with bikes. How to determine the year value etc of your bicycle

I'm trying to find the serial # for my 20 year old Murray bike

Look on outside of left rear dropout (where the wheel slides in) or under the bottom bracket (crank housing). Not very useful or important - your Murray is not collectible at all, parts do not depend on model year, and hard to get any info from serial number on a department store bike. Looking for the make of a frame with this serial number U485606471 or U4356064171

Locating your bike's serial number. The majority of serial numbers are located under the bottom bracket where the two pedal cranks meet. Simply turn your bike upside down and record the number. If there is no serial number there then check places like the headset at the front of the bike or the rear stays.

Ware do I find the serial number?

Flip the bike over and it is generally stamped into the bottom bracket shell. Bicycle serial numbers are unique to each manufacturer and there is no national standard like for automobiles, so it's not going to tell you much. Most bike makers use several different factories to make their bikes and then slap their logos on them.

Serial number

Serial numbers are typically stamped onto the bottom of the bottom bracket shell. Turn your bike upside down, look near the cranks and most likely you will see some alpha-numeric characters stamped into the bottom near the cranks, sometimes the paint fills them up a little and makes it hard to read and a magnifying glass can help.

Boulder 3 Mountain Bike..location of serial number

Serial Numbers are usually in one of two locations.
  1. Turn the bike upside down and look at what is the very bottom of the frame where the pedals and cranks pass through. This is the bottom bracket shell. Serial numbers are commonly stamped here and will be a long series of numbers and letters
  2. Occasionally they are also stamped inside the rear dropout on the left or right. The rear dropout is the part of the frame where the rear wheel is connected.

I loss my Serial number:

Most serial numbers are located on the bottom of the bike known as the bottom bracket. Too view the serial number flip the bike over and look between the crank arms on the bottom bracket. If the serial number is not visible it may be under a the guide for the cables and that will need to be loosened. Other places for a serial number, but much less common are the underneath of the rear stays or the rear dropouts.
