Question about Dishwashers

Open Question

Pdw9280n20ss We woke this morning to the smell of burnt plastic. The smell was coming from our GE Profile dishwasher. I opened the door and it was burning hot to the touch and the heating element appeared to have never shut off from to prior evening dish cycle. Any plastic material such as dishes and spoons had melted. Nothing was directly touching the element. I don't believe the element is bad because of all the heat coming out of the unit. I immediately shut the circuit breaker off. I would like to repair myself. Is there a thermostat or another part that could be replaced to fix this problem? Is there a way to trouble shoot the problem? I don't believe it is the element. Thank you in advance for your help.

SOURCE: Heating element comes on and stays on when not even called for.

There is a stuck relay or switch somewhere.

The important thing at this point is that you get it turned off!!!

Flip the breaker if you have to, but get it off, as it is a fire hazzard like that.

You can attempt to diagnose the problem yourself if you like and we can help. You will need a multimieter hat can read Volts, amps, and ohms.

If not, disconnect power and call a pro. But whatever you do, get it off ASAP.

Burning Frigidaire dishwasher

After you turn off the power to your dishwasher, you can inspect the dishwasher with a flashlight to find where the melting happened. If it is near the circle that is the heating element, you can suspect the timer froze during the drying cycle.

But also open things up and look for shorted/melted wires (in the door panel and under the dishwasher.)

No matter what you find, if you have proof of purchase for your dishwasher, I would press for repair/replacement from the manufacturer.

Good Luck!

Dishwasher door will not open.tried running it another cycle and still nothing. It is a GE profile with the latch that you just push in. The latch/handle seems stiff.

The plastic latch release inside the door handle is broken. Most likely one of the pins holding it in place has broken.

First go to your local dishwasher supplier and look at a similar brand (GE Profile in my case) and see how the mechanism works. Next, get a thin pair of siccors, pull the dishwasher handle down and slid the siccors into the opening above the handel and push the tab holding the door closed up so it will release.

Once the door is open, remove the inside of the door to get to the latch. Remove the plastic latch release and order a new one.

GE PRofile Diswasher PDW9880

you probably need a new control panel. The panel isn't sealed to the face everywhere, and food or water runs down the internal cable.
my panel burnt up. replacing it fixed the problem.

I caulked it in with clear caulk to prevent a recurrence.
