The turntable on the Crosley I have just brought, spins round unevenly(up and down),is this a problem as it plays some records ok but will not play others.

The platter should be level. If it is not then it could either be warped, by oil, heat affecting in the past. Or just faulty. Even if a warped turntable plays a record OK, it could damage it, as it is so easy for a record to be damaged, it could cause a scratch on the record. It should be checked out.

Turntable troubleshooting

My guess would be Old Receiver, Amp ... have a phono input what is in a simple way a pre-amplified input , newer receiver don't . You just need to buy a small Phono Turntable Preamplifier ( less then $20 on line) you are going to install between the receiver and the turntable and you should get some sound at the right level.
Good luck.

I bought a crosley cruiser turntable (orange portable) in NY USA. I brought it to Dubai UAE, plugged it in and the voltage was too high. It "cooked" Can this ever be repaired and if so what needs to be...

As with most things it depends on how much you are prepared to spend on getting it fixed and how much a new turntable would cost.
It's likely that damage is extensive and that the transformer would need to be replaced. If more of the power supply section is damaged then the bill will run up quickly. A look inside will give you an idea of the damage. If lots of parts look burnt or damaged, I think you can call it a day with it. If it looks good then contact Crosley for a list of authorised service centres.

If you can get inside the turntable then you should look for a glass looking fuse or anything that says "ma" or "A" on it. The fuse itself will have what it type it is on it. Some circuit boards have the ratings on too! If you can't find one then replace the power supply adapter.

You definately fried some parts in the power supply, probably a fuse, transforner, and possibly other stuff, impossible to tell without servicing it. You might call a repair shop and get an estimate, then go from there.
