Question about Toshiba Office Equipment & Supplies
Dear Sir/Madam, We have the Toshiba 523. It completely does not work in copying, although it works in first time after turning on. Unfortunately there is not any maintenance company and related services in here. If you try to copy, can you see the scanner light moving across? If not the lamp has failed. If it always works first time, that could be a failing lamp or a poor connection

SOURCE: Devise won't work at all
I had the same problem but found the solution. Follow exactly: (1)With the power on unplug the printer (2)Open up the printer pull the ink carrier to the middle.Then raise the gray bar from the cartridges and remove the printer head (3) Lower the gray bar, with the head out, and close the printer (4) Restore the power, wait til the printer wakes up (5) The printer should then tell you to put in the cartridges (6) Restore the print head and everything should be fine.

That is something to do with the drum maintenance system.
1 of 2 thinhgs is most likely. Remove the maintenance tray and look at the tabs the stick out from it. About 1 inch long or less and 1/4 inch high or so. Those will wear and have sort of a step shape to them. That can be the problem itself, but more likely, the maintenance kit clutch is bad and slipping. The timing of the maintenance kit movement is off. Here is that clutch part number
401-0871-00. You can call 1-800-835-6100 and order it from Xerox, or look on google for it. I have found better prices searching, although its not real expansive. It is on the left frame, looking at the front.
You remove the left cover, the clutch is lower on the frame on the front 1/3 of the machine. Really easy to replace and I would say more than an 80 percent chance that cluch will resolve your problem.
