Question about Dell Computers & Internet

1 Answer

Dell XPS 8300 CD (rewritable) tray broke in half from an accidental downward force; I still have the piece that broke. Is this something someone can tell me how to replace internally? Would an external drive work just as well if connected via USB? I need specific details (links if possible) for instructions. Am medium tech savvy, have done operations on the inside of my computer before and feel comfortable with that, but if external is just is good would rather do that. I just sometimes need to load programs that come on CDs and would like to burn them again. Thanks in advance for any help! Kirsten

Hi Brad, Do you mind going to amazon.com and telling me which one specifically to buy? Hope that's not a pain. Thanks!

SOURCE: My Compaq Presario desktop will not burn CDs

Hi,
Perform a system restore and take the computer back to a time before the problems started with burning, or you can download a different media player and try burning with that, real player as a good bit of software to use for burning and Nero is too (Nero is a devoted burning suite)

Get real player here >>>>>>

Get Nero 9 here >>>>>>

That's probably someone who pranked you by setting scripts or programs on your machine to do that. Just run dtrace or something to find out what programs are looking at media status (for 'closed') and decide whether any of them aren't familiar. Depending on your OS it could be a pretty small script or program....

It may on the other hand be something familiar whose backup function you haven't used or addressed in a while....

SGI O2 CD-ROM drive tray repeatedly opens

I am having the same problem. I haven't resolved it entirely, but at least I managed to get it working again by the following steps.

First, disassemble the part of the computer chassis around the CD-ROM drive. Follow the instructions for "replacing the CD-ROM drive" in the SGI 02 hardware maintenance manual. It can be done in 10 minutes with a screwdriver.

After you have gained access to the CD-ROM drive itself, take off the top metal cover. Then you will be able to see the tray and the white gears underneath.

In my case, the problem seems to be caused by some misalignment between some wire springs and the white gears. Note when the CD tray closes, the manual eject button (a black plastic rod on the right) should stick out, and the white piece of plastic with a triangular end on the left should push against the front of the CD tray.

Somehow, the gears failed to push the white plastic piece all the way to the edge of the tray, and the CD-ROM drive thinks the tray wasn't fully-closed, and ejects the disc.

To force the drive to read the disc, pull the white plastic piece on the left with the triangular end towards the edge of the tray. (Pull it towards you if you are facing the front of the drive.) You might need to use some force, but I can get the drive to work this way, even though it still "sticks open" half the time.

Good luck, and if you happen to find a better solution, I look forward to hearing it.
