try a system restore that will bring the laptop back to an earlier time before this happened, if successful your settings should restored. Why did this happen? bad download, a bad device driver, or program compatibility.

Hi, remove it with Windows Password Recovery Tool.
1.Download Windows Password Recovery Tool from Password Recovery Official site http://www.windowspasswordsrecovery.com/.
2.Decompress the Windows password Recovery and note that there is an .ISO image file. Burn the image file onto an blank CD with the burner freely supported by Password Recovery.
3.Insert the newly created CD into the locked computer and re-boot it from the CD drive.
4.After launched the CD, a window pop up with all your account names(if you have several accounts); select one of the accounts that you have forgotten its password to reset it. Just one press, you have removed the password.

Vista 64bit. A few days old. Now getting a blank white square in middle of desktop. If I refresh desktop, background image again fills desktop until I open another window, and then it is back.

That is very strange. I have seen virues do strange things with the desktop and screen savers before. Boot into safe mode (press F8 before Vista Logo comes up) See if you get the same problem.

Turn off any screen savers you have and run a full virus scan.

If this still doesn't fix it search for the system restore wizard in the windows help. Follow the instructions and pic a recent restore point. It should create a restore point each time you install something new.

This will remove the configuration (but not the files) for anything you have installed since the restore point. But one of those programs may have been the cause or your problem. So reinstall one at a time and test inbetween.

Good luck

Background image cannot be changed

i had a similar problem...
go to Start > Run
type "regedit" hit enter
go to:
HKEY-CURRENT-USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ System
see if there is a key that has a name, something like: NoBackground, or something like that... if so it should have a number 1, change it to 0, and that should be it...

tell me how it went :)

The computer turn on for a while then screen turn back off

you say you left it on all night and then when you came to turn it on.so who turned it of or why did it go off ?
you probably have missing sys files in which case ur gonna have to reinstall os to replace sys files( you aint the first,it happens many times for many different reasons)
usually with incorrect shut down ,especially when shut down when updating files;trouble is most of the time you dont know its updating cos its in the background.
boot up with os in cd tray choose install ,not repair .system checks disk and detects existing os ...now you can choose repair unless you opt for fresh install...that choice is yours.either way get you back in windows but repair gets you back before things went wrong with all software/files previously downloaded or saved intact.
