SOURCE: my external hard drive wont

Hmm. then it sounds like it may have gotten corupt. You didnt unplug it while it was in use did you. This can damage the file system and make the hard drive un-usable. have you tried it on any other computer? If no other computer can detect it either then that means you probably lost whatever is on it because the file system got screwed up and cant access anything.

Try it on another computer, if it doesnt work, then we know its toast and we can try booting into the windows install cd on boot and using the windows installer to re-partition it.

If this is the case, let me know and we can do that. To do it, you have to do this:

1: Plug in the hard drive, put your windows XP disk into the CD drive and boot from CD on start up. ( just like installing windows)

2: After the blue screen loads and has some options, go to install windows and it should show your laptops hard drive and the external hard drive.

3: Be sure to select to delete and re create partion on the External hard drive. NOT C: Drive as this is your laptop hard drive.
It will ask if you want to create NTFS or FAT32. Select NTFS.

4: When its done it will be a empty partion and will go back and ask if you want to install windows again. Cancel out of the windows installtion and reboot the computer, when windows loads you should be able to go into MY COMPUTER and see it now.

It will be like brand new and all data will be gone, this is because windows had to format it before re-creating a partition.

This is if you are sure you cant get access to it at all from any computer and have no hope of recovering the data thats on it at all.
If you feel you want to try other methods first, by all means go for it.

I have had to do this at my job with alot of teacher PIN drives and USB thumb Drives because they pull them out while there transfering files and corupt the file system on them.

Let me know

I can no longer access any of my files on my wd1tb network drive

Hello,

It sounds like either the NAS enclosure or the drive(s) inside have failed.

If the enclosure has failed and you don't have any crucial files on it that you don't already have elsewhere, contact www.westerndigital.com for a warranty replacement.

If the enclosure has failed and you DO have important files on it, try having your local PC shop move the hard drive(s) into a new enclosure, if that works you're done, buy the new enclosure.

If the new enclosure fails, your drive is damaged and you will need a pro to help get back your files. If this is the case, reply back with you location(Country, State and City) and I will pass along recommendations for your neck of the woods.

Hope this helps FixYa,

Chris

How do i get rid of the KERNEL_STACK_INPAGE_ERROR on my d600? Occasionally it says UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME instead. Help?

This issue can occur if a requested page of kernel data could not be read from the paging file into memory, or the master boot record is infected with a virus. To further determine the possible cause, you must properly interpret the error message. If both the first and third parameters are zero, then the four parameters are defined as:
  1. 0 (zero)
  2. Page Table Entry (PTE) value at time of error
  3. 0 (zero)
  4. Address of signature on kernel stack
If either the first or the third parameter is not a zero, then the following definitions apply:
  1. Status code
  2. I/O status code
  3. Page file number
  4. Offset into page file
If this is the case, the cause of this issue may be determined from the second parameter (the I/O status code) by using the following information that is listed in a "value of second parameter" followed by "general cause" format:

0xC000000E, or STATUS_NO_SUCH_DEVICE: the drive went unavailable, possibly a bad hard drive, disk array, and/or controller card.

0xC000009A, or STATUS_INSUFFICIENT_RESOURCES: lack of nonpaged pool resources.

0xC000009C, or STATUS_DEVICE_DATA_ERROR: bad blocks on the hard disk.

0xC000009D, or STATUS_DEVICE_NOT_CONNECTED: bad cabling, non-termination, or the controller is not able to obtain access to the hard disk.

0xC000016A, or STATUS_DISK_OPERATION_FAILED: bad blocks on the hard disk.

0xC0000185, or STATUS_IO_DEVICE_ERROR: improper termination or defective cabling of SCSI-based devices, or two devices attempting to use the same IRQ.

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method:
Boot sector virus loadTOCNode(2, 'resolution'); To determine if you have a boot sector virus, run a current virus-checking program, and if needed, disinfect your computer.
Not a boot sector virus loadTOCNode(2, 'resolution'); View the System Log in Event Viewer for additional error messages that help you determine the device that is causing the error.

Bad block. Stop 0x77 is caused by a bad block in a paging file, or a disk controller error, or in extremely rare cases it is caused when non-paged pool resources are unavailable.

If the first and second parameters are 0, then the stack signature was not found in the kernel stack. The cause of this issue is defective hardware. If the I/O status is C0000185 and the paging file is on a SCSI-based hard disk, you should verify the disk cabling and SCSI termination.

If the I/O status code is 0xC000009C or 0xC000016A, this normally indicates that the data could not be read from the disk due to a bad block.

If you can restart your computer after the error message, Autochk runs automatically and tries to map out the bad sector. If for some reason Autochk does not scan the hard disk for errors, manually start the disk scanner. If your computer is formatted with the NTFS file system, run Chkdsk /f /r on the system partition. You must restart your computer before the disk scan begins. If you cannot start your computer due to this issue, use the Command Console and run Chkdsk /r.

Defective or unreliable random access memory (RAM) is another common cause of this issue.

Verify that all the adapter cards in your computer are properly seated.

Ensure that all adapter card contacts are clean.

Disable system caching in the BIOS to see if this resolves the error.

If this does not resolve the issue, your computer mainboard may be damaged.

Will formatting my hard drive erase all the date on it

Formatting will make all of your files unavailable. It is possible to get to the files in some cases even if the drive is acting up, but it is not something for a beginner if your files are precious or valuable. Odds are good a pro can recover them for you, but don't use the drive anymore until someone looks at it.

My external hard drive wont work on my laptop the light comes on so it is powered but i cant locate it anywhere to access it wen i click on the short cut it just says its unavailable

First of all, The shortcut only works if its connected and if its assighned a different port, then it wont work, so just go ahead and delete that for now.

Right click on " My Computer " and select " Manage" When that opens, select " Disk Management " and on the right side it will show all storage devices such as any plugged in pin drives or network drives or external hard drives.

You should see it there and it has a letter attached to it. I.E. C: for your main hard drive, A: for floppy if you have one, D: is normaly the CD Drive.

Depending on what you have or if your on a network, you should see your hard drive, probably as E: or something different.

If you have had alot of different storage devices connected or network drives, it could be that the drive letter its trying to give your Hard drive has already been issued to something else.

on the right, select the external drive ( be sure thats it, dont go changing you C: drive by mistake )

right click and select ( Change Drive letter )

Then change it to something you know isnt in use like Z: or W:

apply, close and windows should recognize the drive and you should have access to it.

If not, come back and we can go from there.

I really need to recover files from my sandisk cruzer

Have you tried this? restart your computer and plug your USB in again(this helps to clean the buffer), see if you drive can be recognized.

If you still can't access the data inside, try this data recovery program Wondershare Data Recovery. Get the program here,

Windows Data Recovery (Windows Version)
Mac Data Recovery (Mac OS version)

Take care - Before those items are recovered, stop saving more files to the device in case the file data are overwritten!
