This error message means the computer cannot find the hard drive and therefore cannot boot up. This is caused by either the BIOS configuration cannot detect the hard disk or the hard disk has failed. Check the BIOS configuration, has it detected the hard disk. If the hard disk is not detected, to test the hard drive, remove the hard disk and connect it to a USB hard drive adapter and plug it into a working computer's USB port and if this computer sees it as an external hard drive and you can view and open the files on this drive then it is OK and the fault is in the laptop. If the computer cannot detect the hard drive then the hard drive is faulty and you need to install a new hard drive in the Gateway and install Windows, the device drivers and your programs to get a working computer again.

Is the replacement hard disk you used a new one or a 2nd. hand one?

Did you check the BIOS setting to see if the BIOS detected the hard drive.

If it is a new hard disk and you get the same error message "media card check cable" you could have a faulty disk controller. this you cannot fix.

If it is a 2nd. hand hard disk, then this hard disk is also faulty.

You could have a hard drive problem. To check the hard drive boot up to the Windows XP cd in repair mode. At the C prompt type: chkdsk /r
This will start a program called Check Disk that will evaluate your hard drive and attempt to fix any errors. it Check Disk is successful it will complete 100% and return to a C prompt. You can then attempt to reboot. If Check Disk finds unrecoverable errors you will need to purchase a new hard drive and rebuild the OS.

I am getting a disk read error occurred. Press ctr-alt-del. what can i do to fix this

Your computer cannot read your copy of Windows from your 'C:' disk-drive.
You need to purchase a replacement disk-drive, and re-install Windows onto the new disk-drive.
I hope that you have a good backup of all your files!

I have a optilex 170l dell computer i replaced the hard disk and now i gives me a disk read error occured press ctrl+alt+del to restart

Press ctrl+alt+del to restart is just an instruction. Did you do it?
What happened? Was it read? Tell us more. Send your e-mail for
us to give you our feedback.
By the way, assuming that it did not work, Your hard disk must be
configured to your PC, by running a software driver for your new hard
disk. You can download it from the internet by running search " hard
disk driver". Just specify the brand.

Problem with a disk read error

There are a couple of possibilities.

1. The hard drive is defective.

2. The operating system is corrupt.

The easiest way to test this is to run the restore cd that came with the computer to reload Windows.

If you get this error while running the restore cd then you will need to get a new hard drive.

Start up problem

hi steve,

can you get into the BIOS?
if so, would u make sure the boot orders are following:
1st. boot from hard drive,
2nd, cd rom
3rd, floppy,
4th, network adaptor?

save changes and try restart.
i hope you do have OS installed.
if not change 2nd part to 1st, and 1st to 2nd.

i have gotten the same error with my laptop. my computer was trying to load window from network, through network adapter.

hope this information helps.
