  • Anonymous Mar 26, 2014

I have a Kenmore Model Number 110.86880100, Stock No. 68801, Serial Number M81524678 and it's not heating. The local appliance repair says if I can bring in the element and switches they can determine which is not working. I can't even find these things on my dryer! The panel and back doesn't look like any of the videos or pictures I can find!

Only 2 things can be wrong, the heater element is toast or one of the safety thermostats is fried, most likely it is the heating element. make sure its well connected(while unplugged!!!)

YES NOT UR THERMAL FUSE.
BUT MAYBE AN OVERHEATING ISSUE

DRYER OVERHEATING:

Heating Element
A defective heating element can make a dryer too hot. If the element partially shorts out, it can produce heat all the time, regardless of whether the dryer is calling for heat. Remove the heating element to inspect it. The coils should not be touching each other or anything else.

Other Causes and Conditions
Air Flow Problem
Dryers need good ventilation to work properly. If the vent is clogged it can make the dryer too hot. Clean all of the vent tubing thoroughly.

Cycling Thermostat
Although not common, a defective cycling thermostat can make the dryer too hot. The cycling thermostat is supposed to turn on and off the heat to maintain the proper temperature. If the thermostat is defective it may keep the heat on too long. The thermostat is not adjustable or repairable, it must be replaced.

Felt Seal
Most dryers have a felt seal at the front and rear of the drum to keep the heat inside the drum. If the felt seal is worn away or missing, the dryer may keep heating and make the dryer too hot. This is not common.

Blower Wheel
A defective blower wheel will not spin properly and will not vent the hot air, making the dryer too hot. Check to see if there is adequate airflow out of the dryer.

All of a sudden, my 18 year old Kenmore gas dryer is not producing hot air. The motor is working & the barrel is revolving. What can I do short of spending $500-$600 for a new comparable Kenmore gas...

It sounds like your heating element has given up the ghost and broken OR you have a bad thermostat that isn't telling the heating element to work. I would suggest you find the tag on your dryer with the model number on it and then go to www.searsparts.com and look it up and find the heating element and thermostat and decide if you want to spend that much.

NOTE: Usually, on older models, I always recommend that my client replace both so that I don't have to come back again in a few months to change the other. They seem to both fail close to each other.

I would like to know what year my dryer was made. Model # 110.86071120

This is the model number. You need the serial number. On all Sears Kenmore dryers the date code is in the serial number. The first 2 letters will be the make & location. The following 3 numbers will be the year & week produced.

This sounds like the dryer coils are failing. They tend to fail as they heat up. Here is a link that should help http://appliancehelponline.com/gdryertroublevideo.html

Kenmore Electric Dryer Heating Problem

Most heat related problems with dryers are attributed to poor air flow. I would start there first in determining if you have a ventilation problem BEFORE replacing any components. If you don't, and you have a clog somewhere, you will end up with the same problem and repeated failed components. The following link gives some useful advice on how to troubleshoot a no heat problem:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r630242-dryer_runs_but_not_heat

Pay particular attention the first major paragraph that discusses the ventilation. Follow the advice and attempt to run the dryer without the exhaust vent attached, first. If the dryer begins to heat, you may have gotten lucky and avoided any failed components. However, if the dryer still does not produce heat, you probably have blown a component in the heating circuit. More commonly, the thermal cut-out (TCO) blows. Make sure you check ALL heating circuit components before taking my word for it, just to be sure. Reminder: If the TCO is blown, it is highly recommended that you replace the hi-limit thermostat at the same time. In many cases, these components are sold as a set.

Go to searspartsdirect.com and type in your model number as "110.62972100". Look under the "Bulkhead" heading for item number 47 (This is the TCO/thermostat set I am referring to). Refer to this drawing as a reference for your component identification (the Heating Element is listed as item 14). I hope this information helps you. Let me know if you require additional assistance.
