Question about Briggs & Stratton Briggs Stratton Intek V - Twin Vertical Ohv Engine with Electric Start 22 Hp, 1" X 3 5/32" Shaft, ModelNo. 44K777 - 0027 - E1

Husqvarna YTH 2448 charging/starting problems.

This is a 2005/6 mower with the 24hp bs v twin ELS engine. The mower stopped charging the battery last year and I noticed the regulator was damaged/melted. Our dog chewed through the wires around the same time. Wires were patched back and the regulator was replaced from Sears parts, but still no charge on the ampmeter. It has the electric blade engagement which shows a big draw on the ampmeter when its engaged. I'm somewhat familiar with stators since thats what my old Mercury 500 has, but I'm not sure what could go wrong with one or how to get to this one. I see the two black wires coming out from it, but thats about all I can see. It's a big pain having to jump it off my boat battery every time I use it or it cuts off from the charge being so low on the battery. The mower mows great and I love the hydrostatic transmission, but not happy with the engine other than that it is powerful... when it runs.

I have just came through the same scenario. I replaced the regulator, but that wasn't enough, I also had to remove the flywheel which exposed the altinator, the altinator was burned up. I don't know why, or how this happened. I went to the local Briggs and Stratton dealer and bought a new Altinator for $65.00, installed it and viola! charging again.
The whole job took about 3 hours, most of that time was finding the pullers and setting them up to break the flywheel free.

Good luck...

Please don't jump start your mower and mow with a low battery. This is a very expensive mistake. If the mower is not producing enough charge, then you will have low current going to your electric clutch. It will burn up in short order and you will be buying a new one for a couple hundred bucks--Most definately won't be on warranty.

Can I swap the motor from a Husqvarna YTH 180 and put it in a Husqvarna YTH 1848 HP?

The 1848 uses an 18 HP Twin cylinder engine. Mine is a Kawasaki but a similar 18 - 21 HP Kholer will also work. Can't see a problem

First service my YTH 2448

First service is engine oil change and oil filter if fitted, air filter change, in line fuel filter change, check sharpen blades, re tighten all externall nuts and bolts, no need to change the fluid in the hydro unit, just check for any external leaks, allow a couple of hours to do this.

On a Husqvarna 2005 ELS 2448 riding mower, PTO switch burns up, and wont blow the fuse first? Why?

I used to see this on the Kawaski engine machines with an electric clutch, they put a diode between the two clutch wires so as so as to stop any electrical feed back throught the clutch, when the machine is running without the clutch engaged it can turn into a generator.

Battery drains while mowing - after about an hour I cannot engage blades if I stop mowing - I have to charge battery after each mow - Have changed battery thinking that was problem but it still continues...

Charging system on the engine is not charging, either the charging coil under the flywheel is bad, or the regulator is not working, you need to check what voltage/amps is coming out of the system, before doing thsi just check all the battary leeds are tight also the negative battary leed has a good earth at the chassis.

LT2180 engine will not charge battery. New coils installed last year due to rodent damage. Regulator??

The LT2180 has a voltage regulator, good chance it may be that. When you say it will not charge battery, did you check the output? Put a voltmeter on the battery not running and check voltage. Then start engine and check again. If the voltage does not go up then there is a problem. Would not want to see you replace a voltage regulator when the battery may not be holding a charge.

My 24hp v twin is not charging. Once the battery gets so low, the blade quits turning as there is not enough juice to engage the electric clutch. Is the problem with the voltage regulator

Yes it is most likely the regulator/rectifier. This can be checked with a multimeter. You should have ac volts going into it and dc volts coming out if it. Regards Phil
