No connection from remote to screen

The wii is on and the menu has come up but the remote is not registering(no hand on the screen). Tried new batteries, have re-sync the remote and console and even tried a friends remote and still nothing.
Last time the will worked a message came up on screen saying the connection from the remote had been lost, i think my remote may be knackered but it doesn't explain why the other remote i tried didn't work.

Your sensor bar is definitely burned out, you can get a new wireless one at wal-mart for $20. Often wii sensor bars burn out because people put it directly on the tv instead of using the stand, the tv gets hot and the LED lights in the sensor bar burn out. If you want make sure that it's the sensor bar that's broken, get a video camera and video tape the sensor bar while it's plugged in and the wii is on, if you can't see four LED lights on each side then it's broken.

Mario cart will not recognize my second remote.

Another possibility is that the original poster did not push the "+" button on the main remote when on the screen in Mario Kart to register additional remotes.

This happened to me. I was holding down the 1 and 2 buttons over and over on the second remote, watching the blue lights flash, but the remote wouldn't register. Eventually someone noticed the instructions on the screen to push the "+" button. When you push the "+" button, another screen appears to let you really register additional remotes.

In Wii Sports, there is no pushing of the "+" button to register new remotes... I had incorrectly assumed it worked the same way in Mario Kart and didn't bother reading the on-screen instructions.

Discs wont register on wii system, remote wont work either

You need to sync the remote with the console.
Remove the battery cover from the remote and press the red
button until the blue lights start to blink. At the same time,
press the the red button to the front of the console.  You
can access this button by removing a small cover on the front
of the console. This will reset the machine and you should
start to see th cursor in the tv screen. Repeat this if necessary
and you should be on your way. Good luck
