Question about Canon PowerShot S5 IS Digital Camera

Canon S5 IS Powershot - Display Screen/Viewfinder Darkens

The display screen and viewfinder darkens prior to taking a photo in every mode except for Sports mode. I found mention in the Adv Manual that this could occur when taking photos in bright light, but is not recorded darker. This occured with our camera when taking photos in the evening with good light, but not bright, from one picture(ok) to the next (dark). As a matter of fact, I have taken photos with the camera prior to this in all light conditions from sunny beach to a dimly lit room and have never encountered anything like this. The condition is recorded and occurs at any light now in every mode except sport mode, thus making the pictures dark. I did find mention of someone getting underexposure on one of the problems on your site, but the solution did not fix my problem. I have tried the ISO setting in the auto mode, but it doesn't matter if it is on auto or on High. Do you have any ideas? Thanks.

U have a sick puppy on your hands. Hopefully, the camera is still under warranty. If not, it may not be cost effective to repair and replacement might be in order.

No image is available to view on the lcd screen canon ixus85is

Click the "disp" button. The display of the camera has been turned off in the LCD screen but you can still use the viewfinder, this functionality is just for those who prefer to use the viewfinder instead of the LCD screen.

Screen went black

Think that you might have accidentally pressed the DISP or DISPLAY button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the LCD display on and off to save batteries. You would then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn the screen back on, just press the DISP button one more time.

Double check if the viewfinder is operable (not the LDC but the little thing you look through with one eye above it). Try pressing the display button to flip through the different modes as you're looking through the viewfinder. If the viewfinder does work (and the LCD screen doesn't come on as you're scrolling through the modes) then it is most likely dead (broken). If the viewfinder works, you're can still use the camera otherwise it's probably time to get a new one.

Sounds like you accidentally pressed the DISP (Display) button on the back of your camera. This manually turns the screen on and off in picture taking mode to save battery power. You could then use the optical viewfinder in its place. To turn it back on, just the DISP button one more time.
