Ultrium 2 drive automatically ejects tape

Are you using the correct tape? If you try and use an LTO3 or LTO4 tape then it will just eject.

Does the drive make a clattering sound when first turned on and it goes through its POST ?

If the answer is YES then the drive has had a damaged tape loaded into it and the drive now needs repair.

Goto www.tape-drive-repair.com for repair or replacement options as these are quite inexpensive these days

Also try inspecting your media as per the guide here.
http://tape-drive-repair.com/tools-and-information/lto-media-inspection-guide/

If you find any damaged tapes then make sure to throw them away as should you reload these tapes they will go on to break your LTO drive again.

IBM GEN2 LTO SCSI FIBRE Setup, Operator and Service Guide GEN2

See Table 13 and 15.

The '6' means the drive detected a drive or media error. With only the Single Character Display it can't get specific. Follow the directions except I would highly recommend you run a Clean Cart first.

Handle your media carefully and keep them from experiencing any changes in temperature or humidity, say, on that trip to Iron Mountain. Alway open the slide door on the cartridge to examine the leader's proper positon before you use the tape or especially before you introduce it into any robotic environment. Dropped tapes will jam in or kill tape drives, always in the middle of the night. An ounce of prevention.

Insert backup tape, can hear it, then ejects, it doesn't matter which tape (two week cycle) - none will stay in drive. HP Ultrium 215 LTO 1

Sounds like a lost leader. When the tape is loaded there is a leader in the tape drive that hooks onto the end of the tape and pulls it out and onto the take up reel. If the leader gets out of position then the drive fails to load the tape and it is ejected. To fix it requires taking the drive apart. This might be a good time to upgrade to a newer model LTO. They were redesigned to eliminate this problem.

Using SDLT cleaning Tape

When the drives Clean LED comes on, install a "Universal" LTO Cleaning tape, as these drives do not need routine cleaning. Only ever clean a LTO drive when it's requested, as the cleaning media itself is more abrasive than a standard tape.

Hi I need to manually remove a tape from a quantum 3 superloader. The tape appears to be stuck in the drive

Hi Adrian

I would suggest sending it to www.tape-drive-repair.com for them to fix as once the tape has been removed you will still probably have the original fault that caused the tape to get stuck.

If you do try and remove the tape yourself be extremely careful as those drives are very easy to break the load mech and tape leader assy if you dont know exactly how to remove them.

Bear in mind the tape may not actually be stuck though!

Try powering off and on the loader with it disconnected from the server just in case it is your backup software not letting the drive eject the media as this is a common issue (where the software tells the drive it is using the tape (or hasnt finished with it) and stops the eject button from accidental operation)

Hi,

if you "have not" using Backup Software (e.g. Symantec Backup Exec, CA), you can try this IBM LTO-4 driver for Win2K.
