Question about Singer 2638 Mechanical Sewing Machine

1 Answer

Only performs straight stitch

When my machine begun to show issues with stitching the type of stitch I chose, I found that by switching back and forth from and to the stitch, along with turning my machine on and off would eventually fix the problem. Now that method does not work. My machine only does straight stitch now. Are there troubleshooting steps I can take to find a solution? Thank you.

Update: I took the covers off the machine, looked at the inner workings as I switched from stitch setting to stitch setting, put a few oil drops here and there. And somehow this fixed the machine's issues.

Try oiling the hook if you haven't recently.
Check you needle plate and hook for damage, they may need to be buffed or sanded smooth.
Check your upper tension discs for lint and double check your upper thread path (proper threading).
There are other things like hook timing, needle clearance or broken check spring that may be wrong but you need a technician for those things.
best of luck!

SOURCE: machine beeps and stops sewing, no error message displayed

sounds like not through the tension plate (on top) right... rethread and make sure you hold the thread taunt toward you as you putt through top tension... you should hear a slight click and some resistance...

Turn the dial for stitch length so that the black line that separates the stitch length numbers from the buttonhole functions is in the 12 o'clock position. This engages the gears that operate your red stitches.

I cannot get the green decorative stitches to work. I'm insure if my Bernina 930 is broken or I'm just unfamiliar with this machine. How do I set my machine for the embroidery stitches?

There are 2 levers on the top that need to be set. One shows the green stitch selections. That needs to be set to your stitch choice. To its right, there is another lever called the "changeover lever." It needs to be pushed all the toward the back of the machine--that switches it from straight stitch to decorative stitch.

Then on the bottom front on the right is a large knob. Both the outer ring of the knob and the inner knob perform different functions. One drops the feed dogs for darning or raises to activate the feed dogs to pull the fabric through the machine. The other part switches between the red and green stitch selections. When that knob is turned the light should show green or red to coordinate with the stitch selection lever on the top of the machine.

So to make decorative stitches, there are 2 levers that need to be moved plus the red/green activator knob. In addition, you will want to adjust the stitch width dial and the stitch length lever to widen or lengthen the stitch.

My sewing machines picks what stitch it wants to use

Turn the power off and try to move the needle bar back and forth horizontally. Does it move easily? No means the installation position needs adjusted so that it will move easily. The other areas that could be a problem is 1. pulse motor or wiring needing replaced. 2. PC Board needs to be replaced.

Make a rolled hem

If you want it done entirely by machine you will need a special attachment. You'd have to check the make and model of your machine to find out if there is an attachment available from the maker. If not, there are some companies that make general attachments, and they'll list what machines these will fit. Check online sewing supply houses for this kind of thing.

You can also make one by hand. Any decent sewing book would tell you how. Usually you sew a straight stitch along the hem, using quite small stitches. Trim hem to a quarter inch from the stitch line. Crease the fabric or press it along the stitch line to the inside. Anchor your hand thread, then take a short stitch right along the stitch line. Next catch one thread of the fabric a quarter inch above the stitch line. It's just a basic running stitch, back and forth. Every few stitches, gently snug up the thread, which will roll the hem over. The finer the fabric, the smaller the stitches you take where they'll show should be.

There are some images that will help, if you enter the following search terms in google, you will see several pictures. Type the words," Illustrations for how to make a rolled hem by hand ? " and you will get a load of ideas.

My machine is stuck on zig zag stitch and I need straight stitch

THE TOP OF YOUR MACHINE NEEDS TO BE REMOVED. A ROUND THING WITH BUMPS ON EACH SIDE IS USED FOR ZIGZAG STITCHES. A LITTLE PIECE OF METAL RUBS AGAINST IT AND CAUSES THE NEEDLE ARM TO MOVE BACK AND FORTH IN THE SAME METHOD THE BUMPS ARE LAID OUT. AS YOU MOVE YOUR ADJUSTMENT KNOB THE LITTLE PIECE OF METAL HAS TO BE MOVED TO A POINT THAT IS SMOOTH SO THE NEEDLE WON'T MOVE IN ZIGZAG FIGURES. THIS AREA OF THE MACHINE CAN BE CLEANED WITH A CUE TIP VERY WELL. AFTERWARDS LIGHTLY OIL ALL METAL TO METAL PARTS. SOMETIMES THE PART THAT MOVES AGAINST THIS WHEEL HAS TO BE ADJUSTED. THERE ARE SCREWS ON IT THAT WILL ADJUST IT SO THE SEWING STITCH TYPES WILL MATCH THE STITCH TYPES CHOSEN.

Depends on what stitch you intend to use. I do a lot of mending with a three step zigzag set to maximum width and minimum length -- see: http://www.picturetrail.com/sfx/album/view/24395076 A wide, short zigzag stitch is another popular choice, as is a straight stitch worked back and forth over the area: http://www.running-w-scissors.com/2014/01/tutorial-patch-mend.html

If you're just mending a seam that's come unstitched, a straight stitch or zigzag stitch similar to what's already in the seam is what you're looking for.

Straight stitch has peaks

Check your stitch pattern because you most likely have machine set to perform a blind stitch. chane your pattern setting to desired stitch and make sure you use appropriate foot attachment for the results you want. jimmy

Trouble sewing lycra fabric using a zig zag stitch

You have the machine set for blind hem stitching. Change the stitch selector to stretch stitch, which is a single, in line stitching zig zag stitch.

I cannot get my sewing machine stitch the different stitches. I've followed all the instructions in the manual and all I get are straight stitches. I want to get a zig zag. Sometimes it looks like it did...

When you select a pattern does the needle move back and forth? do you make sure the stitch width lever is on straight stitch then select your pattern then select the widest stitch width? if when you select a zig zag stitch the needle does not move from side to side then you need to look in the top at the finger that goes round the cam.
