My machine doesn't run although it is on

I have to jiggle the foot pedal's cord at the machine connection to get it to move.

Deborah's do agree: You probably have a short at the machine side of the cord, which is loosing it's electrical pathway. You need to replace the cord by having it serviced at a SEW&VAC store or other authorized repair store.

Actually, I believe that Deborah is referring to the whole foot pedal. Believe it or not there are not that many foot pedals out there, and yours should be easily and relatively inexpensively replaced. My favorite method is to go to eBay and type in that model, and most of the time, SOMEONE is offering a replacement foot pedal for your machine. Alternatively, you could try Sewing Parts Online; they have a comprehensive list of parts that they sell.

I have a Singer Merritt 4530.  I don't know if the foot pedal works the same way on your model, but on mine it is held together not by screws or latches, but simply by white plastic rods that serve as hinges.  These rods have a hole drilled in their center, presumably so some special tool can be used to pull them out.  Lacking a special tool, I glued a nail into the hole, and once the glue dries you can pull the nail and pull the rod out with it.  The rod is about an inch long and held in place merely by friction - no glue or screw threads.  Once one rod is removed, you should be able to slide the pedal off of the rod on the other side, though that might have only worked because some of the plastic housing was cracked on mine.  If you don't want to take the time to test that, just glue a nail into both rods and pull them both out.
Once you get the pedal open, mine had a giant white cylinder that looks kind of like a battery or a fuse.  This thing was getting very hot the longer the pedal was left plugged in.  I read on many web sites that this object can cause overheating or short circuit the pedal so it's always sewing.  It's called a suppressor and can be safely thrown away.  I haven't found an explanation for precisely what it does or why it can be safely thrown away, but I theorize it's a surge suppressor and that most modern wiring isn't going to surge too much.  I got rid of it and the pedal still works and doesn't overheat.  It may be safest to plug the machine into a surge-protected power strip once the suppressor is gone - just my theory.

Sounds like you need to open the foot control and adjust the carbon bar, you will soon see it, just undo the screw and move it away from the contact or adjust the screw in the end.

Check to see if you have your bobbin winder on. That's usually the problem. Just push it to the left and you should be ok.

Make sure that your bobbin winder is pushed all the way to the left (sewing position) and that you have selected a stitch pattern and the length is not on zero.

Yes it's true, most parts are not available for this machine anymore. You might try to push the red reset button on the bottom of the machine. Also make sure that the reset button is not being depressed by anything that the machine is sitting on, and that the reset button pushes in and out freelyl.

What would cause my Kenmore sewing machine's light to turn on but the motor seem to have no power?

The wiring for the older Kenmore is simple. The light switch completes the connection to the light. If the foot pedal has failed or connection loose where the wire attaches from the foot-pedal the motor will not run.

Also if the brushes in the motor are worn or failing to contact the motor internally the motor will not run.

With light on and pedal partially depressed attempt to activate motor to determine if brush connection are faulty. If the motor reacts at all the brushes will likely need to be replaced.

No success borrow a foot pedal from a friend or sewing center to determine if the pedal control is faulty.

Hope this helps?

Pneumatic air foot petal

If the machine won't work with two pedals that are good then the problem isn't the foot pedal. Does the light turn on? If this is functional then you know there is "electricity" attached to it. Since both pedals aren't functional you will have to have the motor and connecting cord (inside machine) to see which is the problem. By the way; if the problem is the cord inside the machine you may not want to plug it in. You stand a chance of getting shocked. Have it checked for safety.

Viking 980 foot pedal not making contact with machine although machine has power.

It could be lint jammed into the jack the cord plugs into. Make sure the jack and plug are both clean and free of lint. It also could be a damaged cord. If a friend has a working Viking pedal try borrowing theirs to see if it works on your machine. If not, your machine might need service.
