SOURCE: CRAFTSMAN Tractor Model%23 917257643 adjust idler

First things first! Before you installed the new belt, did you check the blades and idler pulleys to see if they all turned freely with no resistance while the belt was off and the blade brakes released? Release the blade brakes by engaging the handle with the engine off!
When you installed the new belt, did you put the back side of the belt against the flat pulleys and the inside of the belt in the V-pulleys? Did you double check to make sure you didn't inadvertently miss a belt guide getting the belt on the outside of it instead of underneath it. Did you look at the picture in your owners manual to make sure you had it routed correctly and make sure it is not rubbing against anything when you have the blade lever engaged? CHECK THIS WITH THE ENGINE OFF If you don't have your owners manual, look under the foot boards on the tractor, many of the Sears tractors have the routing diagrams there. If it is not there you can go to searspartsdirect.com , enter model number 917.257644 (NOTE the number difference) and look at the picture of the deck, it shows what the belt should look like when it is installed. You can also download an owners manual there. As best as I can remember, there is no adjustment for the idler pulleys.

SOURCE: 609 yard machine tractor idler pulley spring broke

Here's a diagram, not a great copy, but it may help:
bdb5270.jpg

The spring hooks to the idler arm on the opposite end from where the pulley is mounted. The other end of the spring looks like it hooks to a raised tab on the deck, straight behind the left mower spindle. Hope this helps you, please rate my solution if so, thanks!

Howard, possibly the wrong spring # not matching as parts diagram in links below, do you have the old spring to sort of match it up or are you possibly putting it in the wrong retaining hole. Check the attached links, instruction and guides, Good luck

How to tighten a craftsman LT1000 belt ?

There is an idler pulley that engages the mower deck and tightens the belt automatically on your model. Check to make sure the belt is routed correctly, return spring is in place and that your cable is operating smoothly.

Sounds like you have a broken spring #148 on diagram, part #169022 that holds the idler arm back. Go to www.searspartsdirect.com and enter the model # of your mower and click on the mower deck to print drawing out, take your deck off the mower and see if all the springs are ok. If the pads are closed on the pulleys and the pads release when you turn the idler arm, the deck is ok. The problem will be a bad or disconnected safety switch that cuts the motor off if you try to ingage the mower. If the switch is disconnected under the seat it will kill the engine when the mower is engaged. I had this problem on my mower, just plug the wiring into this switch or replace it if it is bad.

There are blade brakes, one on each blade pulley. You will need to check that the brakes are in good working order and that the springs holding them against the pulleys are in place. Also there is a spring to return the idler pulley to the neutral position. The spring could be broken or the idler pivot rusted not allowing it to return to fully neutral position. This should get you going down the right track. Hope this helps; please vote yes. Thank you.

Blades won't disengage

I would check to make sure you have the correct belt first. There is usually a belt dioagram in the manual and on a sticker on the mower. Then check the idler pivot bracket to make sure it is moving freely to allow the belt to loosen also there is a small spring p/n 169022 that pulls the idler pulley back to disengage the belt when you release the engage lever its is about 1/2 inch by 3 inches long on the center of the deck. Also there are 2 brake cams that lift the brakes off the pulleys make sure they are lubed with wd-40 where the roll across the idle plate, and make sure the idler plat does nat have a worn spot on it where the cam roller rides on it.
