Question about Siemens Dishwashers

Siemens dishwasher won't heat properly, runs for 7 hours

Hi, Our SE36A290SK dishwasher has recently got a problem where it runs for many hours before finishing. At first I thought it was the infamous "Runs forever, showing 1 minute" error caused by a defective relay on the controller board, but it does actually finish the cycle after about 7 hours. The timer starts at 199 minutes, slowly counts down to say 60 minutes, then goes up again to perhaps 130 minutes and so on. Finally it counts down to 1 minute and stays there for a long time while the machine is still rinsing. Normally it would be at the end of the drying cycle now. At last it finishes, though. It also does heat, albeit not very much, but eventually the water gets more or less hot but it takes a very, very long time. While running it never seems to consume more than about 150W which explains why it takes so long to heat the water. I have checked the relays with a multimeter, they work fine. Also the solderings look fine and there are no other signs of problems on the board. What should I do next to locate the problem? I am familiar with fixing stuff, having electronics as my hobby. Thanks in advance, Martin

Can I somehow bypass the control board and manually turn the heater on to test it?

I have measured the power consumption from the heater with a clamp meter. It's only around 1A, what does that say?

Also, I replaced the relays with no luck. Please give some advice. Thanks!

SOURCE: Dishwasher wont finish cycle

I have experienced this problem before and it turned out to be the main control board in the console. Not a cheap fix, either. The control boards are not serviceable, and can run over $100. Sorry, I hope I was of some help.

SOURCE: Dishwasher runs for a long time

If your dishwasher's cycle times are too long, check these:

Water pre-heating
Cycle not completing
Water pre-heating Yourdishwasher may pre-heat the water. If so, and if the water entering thedishwasher is cool, the heater may take up to half an hour to heat thewater.

To avoid the wait, increase the incoming watertemperature before turning on the dishwasher. Do that by running thekitchen sink faucet until the water runs hot. Or increase thetemperature of the hot water to the entire house at the hot waterheater.

Warning! To lessen the risk of scalding, don't set the hot water heater temperature higher than 120 degrees Fahrenheit.

SOURCE: Bosch SHU5300

If your heat cycle is not coming on, which it sounds like it is not, then you may have a problem with the heating system. There is a well known issue with many of the Bosch dishwashers that use the (266746) control module. Basically, there is a relay (which is a kind of electro-mechanical switch) that is used to turn on the built-in heater. There is a solder joint on the main Printer Circuit Board (PCB) that allow electricity to flow to the heater, that joint often will melt away and burn the surrounding area of the PCB. This is most likely a design flaw and appears to occur at about the 4-5 year mark. One way you can test for this is to run the onboard diagnostics routine that is programmed into the firmware of the micro-controller (brain) of the dishwasher. The way to do so it to press and hold the (Scrub Wash & Delicate/Econo) buttons at he same time and then press the on/off power switch to the on position. The LED lights above both those buttons should begin to flash, when they do, press them both again and the diagnostics program will start. It is a multi-phase program that will run for quite a while. Once it finishes, if it is a heating problem, it will end with a number 2 code in the display. If this is so, then it very well maybe the solder-joint issue on the control module and it will need to be replaced. It runs $128.10 US directly from www.bosch-appliances.com. Good luck.

Should only take 120 minutes to run a complete cycle. Your drain pump might not be expelling all the water.
