There is a few problems that would cause this. Does the shiftier move when trying to put it in to gear? If it does then there is something wrong with the clutch collar or the shift fork lawn mower will not shift forward or in reverse - 26e2a13c-665f-4308-b04b-24e348fc5a3e.jpg

SOURCE: wont move forward or reverse-- transmission??

Does it have gears or a hydrostatic (automatic) transmission?

If it's a gear model, sounds like a loose drive belt.

If it's hydrostatic, it could be a belt problem or a problem inside the transmission. If it's a tranmission problem, this is not good. Many of the transmissions on riding lawn mowers are not serviceable - they are just replaced.

SOURCE: Loss of drive in a Craftsman Lawn tractor

I also have a Craftsman tractor with the same problem. Sears repairman said it needed a new transmission and it would cost $1,400 to install. A new one is about $1,000. Anyway, if you remove the battery and the battery tray under the seat it will expose the transmission fill hole (hex). I opened the top and it looked empty. I had a bottle of 90 weight gear oil in my shop and filled the transmission to the top. I have not had any problems with it since. $4.00 bottle of oil verses a new tractor is worth a try.

SOURCE: lawn mower has hydro gear transaxle reverse was

Most of the time when this happens the reverse shift linkage is too short. It is usually cause by either a bent linkage or worn linkage bushings.

The internal shifting fork can be bent inside the transmission which is rare but does occasionally happen... most of the time it is a linkage problem. Also check on the side of the transmission to make sure the shifting lever has not moved from the original position on the Yoke shaft.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Why won't my riding lawnmower shift into reverse?

Some mowers will not allow you to shift into reverse with the blades engaged for safety reasons. Try disengaging the blades then shift into reverse.

My lawn mower model 425613x8a only drives in reverse what is my problem and how do I fix it?

I'am not to familiar, with this model number,of this tractor. But i do know that there is a safety switch, installed below the shift lever. Usually this switch, controls the neural, forward and reverse for your tractor. I suspect the forward motion contact is bad in the switch itself. You will have to remove the motion drive assembly and purchase a new switch, sometimes the safety switch is part of the whole assembly. You can find this assembly, under the shifting lever under the tractor,s floor. It could be on the right side or the left side depending on the location of the shifting lever.Sincerely,Brad Locke DTD 12/03/15

Stalls when engage blades in forward, but cuts fine in reverse

Did you try to disengage the safety feature that should shut the tractor off when the blades are engaged and the tractor is placed in reverse? I believe that it is located under the shift leaver
