Question about Tools & Hardware - Others

1 Answer

I am looking for either replacement knives for a powermatic model #225, 24'' thickness planer with a quiet head which requires 36 knives, or an aftermarket replacement head with indexable cutters. Anyone know if either are available? Thanks Alan

Frezite of Portugal have agents in the States who will be able to assist you. Their products are very good, although not cheap, but are longlasting and hold their edge. I use them in my wood manufacturing business on all my machines.

My problem exactly. Very hard to change blades. I've used wd40, heat, drilled out center of screw, but more of them get stripped all the time.

WHEN PLAINING A BOARD IS COMING OUT WITH A UNEVEN PLAINING ON THE ENDS OF THE BOARDS ABOUT 3" TO 4" FROM THE EANDS.

this is normal with all planers, when you feed the board in the planer there are two feed roller one on each side of the knives so you get uneven pressure on the board at the start and at the end of the board .when planing boards for a project always add 10"inches or more extras then cut to lenght after planing to thickness required. never cut boards to length before planing .

How do i change the blades

Disconnect the planer's power cord, then use the T-wrench that comes with the planer to remove the four screws that secure the top of the planer. Lift the top to remove it from the planer.
Remove the three wing nuts holding the dust cover over the cutter head. Rotate the dust cover up to unlock it from the fan housing, then push the cover to the left to disconnect it. Remove the dust cover from the planer to expose the cutter head.
Rotate the cutter head with a piece of scrap wood until the lock on the side of the cutter head engages. All eight screws in the cutter head clamp should now be visible. Remove the screws using the T-wrench, then turn the T-wrench upside down and use the magnet in the head of the T-wrench to grab the clamp. Remove the clamp to expose the knife underneath. Use the magnet to remove the knife.

Press down on the cutter head lock to free the cutter head. Use some scrap wood to turn the cutter head for access to the remaining two knives. Follow the instructions in Steps 3 and 4 to remove and replace those knives.

I have a Jet CS-13 surface planer. The cabinet version. The cylinder that holds the three cutting knives is not longer parallel with the cast iron table. I have tried adjusting the tilt for the cast...

Hello,
I am not familar with the Jet but have set up alot of planers.
-When you say cylinder do you mean "head" (a head is what holds the knives)?
-When you checked the head being parallel did it have the knives in it? If so it's most likely a knive problem.

-As far as the table being in a bind I don't know.

I would go to you tube and look up "planer set up" , I have viewed alot of there set up videos and they cover alot of the issues you are discussing. The wood whisper videos are a good place to start.

Hope this helps.

MY PLANER WILL NOT TURN ON IT WORK OK IT JUST WANT TURN ON I HAVED HAD IT FOR TWO YEARS NO PROBLEM

U will need to check the power switch 1st, this requires testing a "HOT" circuit and you will need a volt meter and knowledge of electrical testing, if the switch tests ok then the motor is defective and will need to be replaced, this should be performed by a qualified repair center, there are adjustments that need to be done after the unit is pulled apart and the motor replaced to insure correct operation of the plainer

Belt for Powermatic 15" Planer (Planer Model M-0460213)

Order the first one through Powermatic, then order any new replacements from the number on the belt. Or you can measure the pulley belt width and use a metal tape measure to find the total length by running the tape (number side in) over each pulley rim. Then order as a standard hardware source belt. Make sure the motor is bolted down about midway in it's mounting slots when measuring.

Looking for blades for a 6 inch craftsman Jointer/planer. Model number 103 2066. Manufactured by King Seely. Sears Roebuck do not have but I am wondering if there is are generic blades that will fit. (I...

Most reliable sharpening services will be able to grind knives for your jointer that will work just fine. The key is to match the existing knives as far as thickness (guage) and height of the new knives. You want them to give you maximum life but not extend too far past the cutterhead when adjusted all the way down. I don't know about your machine, but on an 8" powermatic the tip of the knife shouldn't extend more than about .0012" above the circumference of the cutterhead. You can check this with a set of calipers and give the height to the sharpener, then just choose high speed steel or carbide and you're on your way.
If you check the overall length of the knives, sometimes they are slightly under the nominal length, and a 6" long knife could bump into the housing as the cutterhead rotates, so this is one other thing to check before you go ahead and order them 6" long.
But the short answer is, no problem. Just get a reliable sharpener to make them for you, buy a quality steel blank, and have him put a fine grit polish or hone on the knives when he sharpens them...

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
