Do these type of top loaders have a drain trap on them that could get gummed up?

Found oil inside at bottom of machine I think this narrows trouble down to a bad transmission.

If you have not recently washed any clothing that may have had oil on it then there are a couple of other causes for this. The start Capacitor could be starting to fail or the transmission is starting to leak.

If the smell is strong then I would suspect the start capacitor the most. You can visually inspect it to see if it is starting to bulge or leak. Let me know if this helps.

SOURCE: Washer not spinning/agitat

This problem is usually attributed to a broken motor coupling. The following link provides step-by-step instructions on how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385252-replacing_motor_coupling_whirlpool_top

The motor coupling is a small 3-piece component that is installed behind the drive motor and couples it to the transmission. It is common for these small couplers to break as they wear out. The key symptom in determining the cause is the fact the washer will not agitate, but still drains. The reason is because your drain pump is mounted on the front of the drive motor and will still run as long as the drive motor is running. The part number is provided in the link I gave you. A replacement coupler can be purchased at searspartsdirect.com, appliancepartspros.com, pcappliancerepair.com or repairclinic.com. All these sites offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop all of them for the best price. Make sure you "Search by Part Number" when looking up the part. This shouldn't cost more than $20. If you do not wish to order on line, take the part number I provided and go to your nearest appliance parts retailer. This is a common item they should have in their inventory.

If you have questions along the way, please let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

The (X) in the model number stands for extra large (2.7cu ft) capacity. The 1 stands for single speed. The 6 stands for 6 cycles. It should have a white plastic clothes basket. More expensive models had a stainless basket. Hope this helps you.

GE 5 Cycle Automatic Heavy Duty Extra Large loud noise

All ge dryers have a center bearing on the back side of the drum and drum glides on the frontside. The glides make a scrubbing sound when bad and the drum is hard to turn. The rear bearing does a squeak thang when the plastic bearing wears thin and begins to make metal to metal contact between drum mount and rear bulkhead mount. It is an easy fix but the drum gotta come out. here is my pictorial page that shows how with videos and repair pix:

GE Top loader, Heavy Duty, large capacity washer does not advance cycles but stays in one cycle. I have to manually change cycles.

Depending on the exact model number it sounds like you are dealing with a bad timer or bad clock on the timer. There are contact points inside the timer and they burn out. Sometimes the clock goes bad It has plastic gears inside and is non serviceable. The only thing you can do is replace the timer or call a local repair technitian to make sure.
