Question about Mtd Garden

1 Answer

Mower will only start with gas poured directly into the cylinder

My MTD mower, when cold, will only start if I remove the plug, pour gas directly into the cylinder, replace the plug, and start. It will then run normally. Using the primer does not fix the problem.

You need to rebuild the carb. The kits are cheap. Less than $10 for most. If that does not work possible carb replacement needed. Sometimes these carbs get clogged an cant be opened because orifice are to clogged. Carbs are not expensive. For $20- $25 it can be fixed.

SOURCE: gas pouring out of air filter

carb is gummed up from the old fuel turning to varnish and clogging the jets. while trying to start, its trying to inject fuel, but its clogged and taking the path of least resistance (coming out the air filter).

you'll need to drain the gas tank and remove the carb to clean it out. if unfamiliar or uncomfortable doing this, then take it to someone to do a carb cleaning.

SOURCE: Lawn mower will not stay cranked unless you keep pouring gas into

common problems to all older lawnmower, lots of dirt and dust the mower goes through and ages. I would first start by taking the carb apart and clean the filter with soap and water, allow it to air dry. also carburetor prob need rebuilding or replacing. Pick up some Carburetor cleaner at any auto part store and spay it down the carb, dont be afraid to spray allot in there and let it dry for 1/2 and hours. carb tend wear and parts need replacing just like any engines. 99% of the time lawn mower carb goes out before the engine will and common problems with all lawn mower. If you not mechanical incline or dont want to rebuilt it, just buy the whole new carb and replace it, fairly cheap easy to replace and will last you another 10 + years or more. www.briggsandstratton.com

SOURCE: I have a troybilt mower with a honda 160 engine

You may have to replace the carb. But before you do.Check the the fuel line. There is a small screen in the carb,it may be clogged.Inside the tank is a small cylindrical filter, make sure it is good.Break the fuel line at the in line filter,to make sure gas is getting to there,if it is the problem is in the carb.

SOURCE: 190cc series 675 lawn mower wont start..pour gas

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly

Just by searching I think this is your engine number:
126T02-1045-B1
This should be your parts manual: (3.01 Mb)
http://www.briggsandstratton.com/document/index.aspx?doc=MS3728_G_LO.pdf

Most likely the main fuel jet orifice that is inside the threaded area of the Fuel float bowl nut has debris in the pin-hole of the orifice.
Remove the Fuel float bowl and spray carb cleaner using the spray tube directly into the center of the bowl nut area to remove the debris from the main fuel jet orifice. Clean the Fuel float bowl and the bowl nut. On this unit the bowl nut acts as the main fuel jet so any debris in the bowl nut will restrict fuel to the engine. See items 117, 118 and 236 on page 3 of the manual above for location.

Additionaly make sure the fuel shut off on the bottom of the fuel tank is working properly Remove the output hose and check for feul flow. (item 958 bottom right page 3 of the above link)

I think once you clean the float bow bowl and nut that it should work properly. If your still having problems I need to know if this has a primer bulb, Choke Lever or is an Auto Choke carb.

Thanks for choosing FixYa,
Kelly

Murray riding mower will not start. Bought and installed new Champion spark plug, bought and installed new battery. Had fuse checked and it is fine. The mower sounds like it wants to start but will not...

This could be several issues. The most common is gum from the gas building up in the carburetor. To eliminate this as a problem pour a small amount of gas directly in the Carburetor. To access this you will need to remove the air filter. while cranking the mower after doing this "feather" the choke a little. These carburetors get gummed up very easily if left sitting for any period. it could be a matter of bad gas in the tank or possibly water moisture from condensation causing the issue as that will settle to the bottom of the tank and stop the mower from starting. Look in the tank and see if you have what appear to be dark colored blobs in the bottom of the tank, if you do that is going to be part of the issue. If the motor starts when you pour gas in directly in the carburetor the problem is most likely a need to rebuild the carburetor or with the fuel.

Bought this lawn mower. It was sitting for two years and now it won't start.

first things first:
1) make sure that the kill for the magneto/coil is breaking contact( it is on the side of the mower, follow the cable down from the red bar)
2) gas to carburetor
3) spark to plug/s
4) gas to cylinder/s

pull plug and try starting mower, observe spark plug for spark and fuel coming out of cylinder/s. if spark no gas, then check to see if it getting to the carburetor, if it is then it is the float and seat in the carburetor and will need to be cleaned/replaced/rebuilt. Or just simple pour gas into the carburetor and try starting if it starts then it is the fuel line, carburetor. Hope this helped Tim

I have to pour gas down the carb to make it start. the plugs look good but it is hard to start

Check the brass bolt that holds the carb bowl on. It's the main jet and is prone to getting clogged from dried gas...gum/varnish. Inspect it closely and clean with carb cleaner as it has some very small holes in it on the smooth part above the threads. If this unit has a primer bulb, the airway for it to the carb could be blocked. Remove housing and inspect.

How do you drain the oil and gas out of this mower mtd 22' 4hp and how do you change the spark plug? do you need any special tools/thank you soooo much natalie

Drain plug for the oil should be under the deck next to the blade shaft. Usually a plug with a square head on the bottom of the motor. Loosen the fill plug and then remove the drain plug. Any time you go under there make sure you disconnect the spark plug wire so no spark can jump.
Gas is another thing. No fuel line as carb is part of the tank, so only way to empty is to .....
1) tilt the mower over and pour out the gas. Good time to change the oil and do it before you add the new oil.
2) unbolt the tank from the motor and remove tank carb and all a single unit. Then turn it over and dump the fuel. there are only 2 bolts holding it on so after you remover the air filter you can see them easily. Just remember how the throttle linkage hooks on.
