New spark plug, cleaned air filter, won't start, used starting fluid, how do I check spark?

unscrew spark plug . plug cap back on and hold it against engine and pull cord. plug should give healthy blue spark. if orange the little elbow contact on bottom of plug should be adjusted by tapping it lightly to close the gap between electrodes. do not hold plug by its body when pulling starter rope or ignition. if u can smell petrol on plug then ur engine is flooded.

I have a early 1970 1600 dual port volkswagen not getting fire to plugs what could be the problem

IF NOT MODIFIED THIS CAR HAS CONTACT BREAKERS (POINTS) Check for ignition at coil (terminal 15). If OK check if coil is grounding by sorting the negative (1). Also sheck for spark at this point by removing HT lead from distributor and holding en close to ground point (engine or body) but not touching. If coil is ok you should get a spark. Then go to the points themselves, Turn engine to point-closed position then open and release the points with a screw driver. You should see a spark there. If not replace points and also check connection wire fron coil.

Usually if you want to check for spark, you remove one spark plug fron the engine. Then with the wire still connected, set the plug's metal base on a ground such as engine block. However with the coil packs that would be difficult to impossible. Second you can be reasonably certain it's not a coil, wire or plug. This leaves you with very few options. I would suggest turning the key on-off-on-off-on in the span of a few seconds, your digital odometer should then display a series of numbers. These are engine fault codes. If your odometer is not digital then your check engine light will flash a certain number of times, count the flashes and write them down to look up in your service manual, or one at the library.

first check for spark disconnect any plug wire from the spark plug remove the spark plug from the engine reattach the plug wire and set it on the fender well DO NOT TOUCH THE PLUG OR WIRE AND CRANK THE ENGINE AND SEE IF THERE IS A SPARK BETWEEN THE ELECTRODE AND ARM. if there is no spark you have an ignition problem check for 12v at distributor.
if you have spark then check fuel pressure the fuel pump could be bad.

Inspection

Inspect for the correct routing of the spark plug wires. Improper routing may cause cross-firing. Inspect each wire for any signs of cranks or splits in the wire. Inspect each plug wire boot for tearing, piercing, arcing, carbon tracking or a corroded terminal.
If there is any corrosion, carbon tracking or arcing indicated on a plug wire boot or terminal, both the plug wire and component it was connected to should be replaced.

How to change spark plugs in 2.5 misubishi in a 1998 sebring

Remove boot to spark plug using a boot puller. Unscrew spark plugs using a spark plug socket, extension, and ratchet.
Do them one at a time to avoid confusion. Installation is the reverse of the removal.
--- FIRING ORDERS NOTE: To avoid confusion, remove and tag the spark plug wires one at a time, for replacement. If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason, it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes in your book to reflect how your engine is wired. Fig. 1: 2.0L and 2.4L Engines Firing Order: 1-3-4-2 Distributorless Ignition System 90902g01.gif

A ned positon cables fron distribuidor to

1 8 4 3 6 5 7 2 firing order

Cylinder 1 it the furthest forward in the engine compartment. That bank is drivers side 1 3 5 7 Passenger side is 2 4 6 8

You did mark #1 when you took it apart right?

If not, remove coil wire from distributor and ground. (IMPORTANT ALWAYS GROUND THE COIL SECONDARY LEAD) remove #1 spark plug. Turn engine over by hand. When you hear the whoosh that's #1 compression stroke. Line up timing mark to 0 Degrees. Remove distributor cap. Wherever the rotor is pointing, that is #1 cylinder. Crank engine to determine direction of travel of rotor (clockwise probably) Next cylinder will be #8 next will be #4 next will be #3 next will be #6 etc. just follow listed firing order.

After repair is complete reconnect coil wire.

In servicing the spark plug . If the owner will be the one to change the spark plug then. the owner should locate the spark plugs . then prepare the equipments that is going to be used to change spark plug .First disconnect the spark plug cable to the spark pug . Then use the equipment to take the spark plug off to the engine. The spark plug should be twisted counter clock wise using the equipment to remove the spark plug. Then replace the spark plug.In returning the spark plug ,using the equipment you have to twist the spark plug clock wise . Then set the distributor shaft turn it according to the proper firing order that will be set to the spark plug if it is 1,3,4,2. Then the distributor shaft mark will be on 1.If 2,3,4,1 then the distributor shaft mark will be on 2. Then connect the spark plug cable , after connecting the owner have to test start the car so that to if it back fires .If it back fires then the owner have to repeat again the setting of the firing order of the spark plug until it will not back fires. If the owner don't have time to do the job in servicing or changing spark plug then the owner have to go to a car mechanic and let them change the spark plug.
