While the computer is off, press the Fn key that is placed between the Ctrl and Windows key on the bottom left of your keyboard. While holding it, power on your computer, then wait until you see Diagnostics Boot Selected.

Spot screen

Hello

First find an external monitor to test if its the screen on your laptop or the graphics chip in your laptop. If you have an external monitor then hook it up to your laptop and toggle the video over to see if you still see the spot.If it only shows on the laptop screen the Replace the screen.
Another thing you can do is run the built in Diagnostics
Diagnostics before windows using the F12 Diagnostics
* Reboot and press F12 to enter the Boot Menu
* When the boot device list appears, highlight Diagnostics and press Enter
* The computer begins to run the Pre-boot System Assessment, a series of embedded diagnostics that perform initial testing on your system board, keyboard, hard drive, and display
* If the Pre-boot System Assessment completes successfully, you receive the message Booting Dell Diagnostic Utility Partition
* Press any key to continue
* Press any key to start the Dell Diagnostics from the Diagnostics utility partition on your hard drive
* After the Dell Diagnostics loads and the Main Menu screen appears, click the button for the option you want to run -
Express Test = Performs a quick test of devices. The test typically takes 10 to 20 minutes and requires no interaction on your part
Extended Test = Performs a thorough check of devices. The test typically takes 1 hour or more and requires you to answer questions periodically
Custom Test = Tests a specific device. You can customize the tests to be run
Symptom Tree = Allows you to select tests based on a symptom of the problem you are experiencing
* When you have finished running a test, close the screen to return to the Main Menu screen. To exit the Dell Diagnostics and reboot the computer, close the Main Menu screen.

See if you can run the Pre-boot System Assessment(PSA) diagnostics. To run the PSA+ Diagnostics on this system, perform one ofthe following actions: b> 1) Hold downthe key while pressing the power button. b> 2) Turn onthe system, press at the initial Dell™ logo screen, and select "Diagnostics" from the bootmenu. b> 3) Disconnectthe AC power and remove the battery. While holding down the power button, insert the AC connector into the back of the system. The system then starts andthe message "Diagnostic bootselected" displays. The system then launches the PSA+Diagnostics.
If diagnostics pass then you have a software issue.

Computer boots up but then goes into a black screen I have run a Dignostic on it and I get an DST Short Test Error Code 100-0146. This is a Dell Latitude D600. Thanks In Advance

This error indicates that your hard disk drive or the circuitry that controls the hard drive is defective.
Either your hard drive is defective or the motherboard.
Try running diagnostics form a CD on your computer. You should have a CD that came with thecomputer that has "Diagnostics and Utilities" listed under contents.Boot form this CD and run the extended diagnostics.
If you don't have the CD you can go to www.support.dell.com andselect "Drivers and Downloads". Enter the "service tag" (serialnumber) of the computer. You can then download "Diagnostics" .
To boot from a CD disk, power on your computer and tap the key tobring you to the "One time boot menu". Insert the CD into the top CD/DVD driveand then select "Boot from CD/DVD" and hit key. Select the"Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics.

If you are able to run the Diagnostics then your hard drive is probably defective.

My Dell inspiron 1501 went to a blue screen and gives me an error message when reading the Hard Drive upon boot up. I am told the disk is either malfuntioning on logic or may have crashed. How can I find...

fortunately dell has built in diagnostics that can assist you with identifying the problem. here is a link on how to run them. if the drive is bad then you would need to replace it and reinstall windows and drivers. if it is good then run memory diagnostics as well just to be safe. if both pass then you may have to do a destructive reinstall of windows because you most likely have a virus issue. copy and paste this link into your browser it will help you run the diagnostics.

hope this helps

"A disk read error occured press Ctrl+Alt+del to restart " FOLLOW THE BELOW INSTRUCTIONS TO RUN DELL DIAGNOSTIC ON INTERNAL HDD Open the Dell Diagnostics on either your hard drive (F12) or from the Resource (Drivers and Utilities) CD. Running from the hard drive is the preferred method of using the diagnostics. From your hard drive: Shut down and restart the computer. When the DELL® logo appears, press immediately. If you wait too long and the Microsoft® Windows® logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Then shut down your computer and try again. When the boot device list appears, highlight ?Boot to Utility Partition? on desktop systems or ?Diagnostics? on portable systems and press . Note: On portable systems, PSA will be executed first. When PSA completes, press any key to load the Dell Diagnostics.? Go to step 2. NOTE: If you receive a message stating that no Diagnostics utility partition has been found, follow the instructions on the screen to run the Dell Diagnostics from your Resource (Drivers and Utilities) CD. From the Drivers and Utilities CD ResourceCD: Insert the Drivers and Utilities CD into the CD drive. Shut down and restart the computer. When the DELL® logo appears, press immediately. If you wait too long and the Microsoft® Windows® logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Then shut down your computer and try again. NOTE: This feature changes the boot sequence for one time only. On the next start-up, the computer boots according to the devices specified in the system setup program. When the boot device list appears, highlight IDE CD-ROM and press . Select Boot from CD-ROM option from the CD boot menu. Select Run the 32 Bit Dell Diagnostics numbered list. If multiple versions are listed, select the version appropriate for your platform. Go to Step 2. After the Dell Diagnostics loads, the Main Menu appears. Click the button of the option you want. If a problem is encountered during a test, a message will display the error code and a description of the problem. Write down the error code and problem description and follow the instructions on the screen. If you can not resolve the error condition, contact Dell. Hey, My Dell Optiplex GX270 will run for a quick second, beep, and then a light with a barrel looking icon lights for a second too. How do I fix this? Thanks so much!

I would run diagnostics. Here's how you do it if the utility partition exists on your hard drive:

Starting the Dell Diagnostics From Your Hard Drive
  1. Shut down and restart the computer.

  2. When the DELL™ logo appears, press <F12> immediately.

NOTE: If you see a message stating that no diagnostics utility partition has been found, run the Dell Diagnostics from your Drivers and Utilities CD.
If you wait too long and the Microsoft® Windows® logo appears, continue to wait until you see the Windows desktop. Then shut down your computer through the Start menu and try again.
  1. When the boot device list appears, highlight Boot to Utility Partition and press <Enter>.

  2. When the Dell Diagnostics Main Menu appears, select the test you want to run.
