When you take off the carburetor initially, you should change the gasket if it tears or just old looking, your problem is in the carburetor, probably. Take it apart remembering where the parts go. There are some diaphragms or gaskets and screens on some, tiny jets and such that are inside the little "bulb" or bowl, that can usually be taken off with a 10mm wrench. They also have little fiber gaskets and a bowl gasket or o-ring that must be in great condition with no trash. Clean off with starter fluid or carburetor cleaner.

How to change the oil on a Briggs & Stratton 450

Sandy you can either drain the old oil from the spark plug socket which would be easier or the oil fill point. Remove the spark plug and tilt mower foward getting someone to hold a pot under it. When it's finished draining only put the same amount of oil back in (fresh) When you have done leave the mower somewhere level for a few hours and then start it. It may smoke for a few minutes.

One year old bolens push mower, 550 series B&S

How is your compression? If it is low, your piston rings and/or the cylinder walls could be damaged and pulling oil up to the combustion chamber, which will burn oil and foul the plug. If you overfill the oil you could possibly get this also. When was the last time that you changed the oil and/or put oil in it? Do you currently have proper oil level?

I have a Troy-Built Series 550 mower with a Briggs & Stratton engine. I cannot find the drain plug. Is there a good diagram available?

Most professional shops no longer drain the oil through a drain plug because of all the covers under the engine. With your Briggs and Stratton engine, the best way is to drain through the dipstick. You can purchase a suction device to **** out the oil, or you can drain it. To drain, place you mower on the tailgate of your truck, or on the picnic table. Grab a drain bucket, remove the dipstick and tilt the handle to the ground. The spark plug should be pointed straight up into the air. Might be a good idea to do a test run before removing the dipstick, so you will know exactly where to hold the bucket. All 20 ounces of oil will drain through the dipstick in about a minute if the engine has been warmed up. Refill with a good quality SAE HD30 weight motor oil. Remember...only 20 ounces. Check the oil level after filling before you start the engine.
Good luck.

Think oil ran in carb

Try to always tilt a mower with the front of a horizontally mounted engine up in the air (head with spark plug end). This will keep the oil from going places it doesn't need to go...like into the carb/air filter area and along the valves into the cylinder head and combustion chamber (unless you get lucky and the piston is running the compression or power stroke with valves closed). You probably loaded the crankcase breather with oil which in turn loaded the carb with oil when you started running it as it vents over via a metal tube an inlet in the air filter housing.
It will take a little time to get all the extra oil thru the carb. To speed this up...pull the breather off the block (on engine side opposite the carb) and stand it up or blow it out allowing all the oil to drain out. Chances are you also need to remove the spark plug and clean it also as it probably is oi-fouled which probably caused the engine to quit in the first place.

I have a 22" bolens push mower with a 5.0 hp Briggs and Stratton engine. Despite a clean air filter, clean oil and good spark plug, the mower would only operate at low idle today (2 years old). I...

Speed Control out of adjustment if one on mower. You probably bound up the linkage when you removed the engine cover. If linkage is not damaged make sure it has free and clear movement. Your mower carb probably flooded the engine, pull spark plug and turm engine over a few times, ckeck spark plug to see it is not wet from gas. Hope this helps !

4.5hp Brigss & Stratton engine.Engine runs rough.

Ok, check the air filter, it could be clogged. A clogged air filter won't allow a proper air-gas mixture. Then check the carb. make sure that it is clean, or if anything doesn't look right. You might have to get another carb. After that check the intake it could be clogged but this time a clogged intake means that there isn't enough fuel getting to the combustion chamer.
