Flop the seat forward and follow the wires going to the center of the seat, push the connector firmly into place - this is the seat switch, it is designed to shut the engine off in case you get knocked off the seat - if it's not plugged in all the way, when you release the clutch pedal, the engine thinks there is nobody in the seat and it kills the power

Have crafstman riding lawn mower: replaced battery, ignition switch, solenoid, and spark plug but it still will not crank and start up. what is the problem?

double check the ground wire going from the battery terminal to the engine...it is usually on a mount bolt at the engine...if the mount bolt is loose, it's a poor connection...

Can I add an hour meter to my Crafstman 917.289340 lawn tractor with the 22 HP Kohler engine? Found a part #401763 for a different model Craftsman. Will it work?

Yes, you need to find a wire that is hot (12vdc) when the engine is running, tap into this wire and hook to the positive side of the hour meter and the other will be a ground. This will keep track of engine hours only. If you want complete total hours, any hot wire with the switch on will work.

Crafstman riding mower cutting off now won't start at all

The two most likely suspects for the symptom you describe are:
a) Ignition coil failure under high heat.
OR
b) Decompression failure due to normal wear.

For a positive diagnosis try the following:

For scenario a)
Run the engine until it shuts itself down. As quickly as possible, check for spark using a spark tester (availabe at local auto parts store). If no spark when hot, allow to cool down and test again. If good spark when cold and no spark when hot, change the ignition coil.
Proper part number (assuming your machine is still all original) Briggs & Stratton part #492341.

For scenario b)
Run the engine until it shuts itself down. Try to restart but pay close attention to the speed of the spinning starter. Next, remove the spark plug and spin the engine over (WITH SPARK PLUG WIRE WELL OUT OF THE WAY!!) If the engine spins super fast and free you can discount the theory of a bad battery and you will need to adjust the valve lash.

Determine which is the case and reply to this post. I will gladly give a detailed explanation of the valve lash adjustment procedure in another post.

Hope this helps!

Craftsman model 917.272950 lawn tractor won't start

OPERATOR PRESENCE SYSTEM
Be sure operator presence and interlock
systems are working properly, If your
tractor does not function as described,
repair the problem immediately.
• The engine should not start unless the
clutch/brake pedal is fully depressed
and attachement clutch control is in the
disengaged position.
• When the engine is running, any
attempt by the operator to leave the
seat without first setting the parking
brake should shut off the engine.
• When the engine is running and the
attachment clutch is engaged, any
attempt by the operator to leave the
seat should shut off the engine.
• The attachment clutch should never
operate unless the operator is in the
seat.

Check your seat switch and clutch switch wires be sure that the connection to each switch is making contact and the mechanism that activates the switch is actually activateing them in other words be sure the clutch is pushing the switch in and your seat switch is occupied and be sure all grounding wires a intack
especially from your battery negative to the frame. You also could have a neutral safety switch which requires your transmission to be in neural.
try these things and let us know how we can further help from more of your input.
