On Mac it's "Force quit".
You can get there by pressing option-command-escape.

Starting iMac OS 10.6.8

Hi Jan,

If you see a spinning grey earth globe, then it's an easy fix.
Starting from a shut down mac, press the start up button then immediately press and hold the Alt button until you see your startup disk appear, release the Alt button, ... select your startup disk and then hit return. The mac should boot up normally.

then immediately go into the System preferences and choose the StartUp Disk icon and make sure you select your harddrive as the start up disk. somehow, network disk was selected and it is timing out looking for it...

Very slow iMac 10.4.11

Well, there are a variety of reasons that can consequently drag down the performance of your Mac. Meanwhile, there are certain ways through which you can considerably speed up your Mac machine. For example, you can reset the browser settings to regularly clear useless caches and history, get rid of all unwanted widgets from the dashboard through the Dashboard control panel, remove unnecessary applications, find out & delete those duplicated files, or if your Mac is running out of memory, try upgrading the system RAM to boost its performance etc. However, if you prefer a more efficient way to speed up your Mac, try the following all-in-one Mac speedup tool as it can help resolve all issues in just a few clicks.

MY iMAC 24" won't go off the apple screen with the spinning circle. I tried unplugging it--unplugged ethernet...etc. started it holding "s" down but nothing??

Was this a restart after an update? sometimes it takes quite a while. if not boot from CD/DVD and repair permission on the drive from the utilities folder. It is the biggest issue with startups.
