In order for a Mac to open files generated on a PC, you must have a program capable of reading these files. The new version of Microsoft Office defaults to saving files in a new format which is not compatible with earlier versions. This can be rectified by 'Back Saving' files to an earlier version of Office in the 'Save' menu. If you have files that you know can be opened with an application that is installed on the Mac, ctrl/click (right click) on the file and chose 'Open With' from the drop down menu. This will allow you to choose the application.
