Keyboard problem My cat puked on the keyboard, and appears to have shorted out a few keys such that as soon as I turn the computer on, those keys keep repeating and typing themselves over and over filling the page with gibberish. What is the easiest way to remove the keyboard?

Really depends on the laptop Some have screws that go through to the bottom others may be removed with a credit card or other device to push locks back on the top of the keyboard While others can be removed after taking off the cover directly above them and removing screws.
Best to go to you tube and you very likely will find a dis-assembly video gl

No matter how careful you may be, knocking a cup of coffee or spilling a glass of soda over your keyboard may happen. This does not, however, mean the end of your keyboard. If you act quickly, you may be able to fix your wet keyboard to avoid any corrosion of its electronic components or any short circuit which might render it unusable. By following a few recommendations, you should be able to fix your wet computer keyboard.

Unplug the keyboard from your computer immediately after the spill to avoid any corrosion or short circuit. If you spilled water over your laptop's keyboard, turn your computer off by clicking on "Shut Down" on "Turn Off" in the start menu, unplug the power supply and remove the battery. Turn the keyboard upside down and shake it to remove most of the water from it. Take a hair dryer and set it to its lowest temperature setting. Use it to dry any water which might remain under your keyboard's keys. Wait at least 12 hours before plugging your keyboard into your computer again. If your computer is a laptop, wait 12 hours before turning it on again. For Other Liquids Disconnect the keyboard from your computer immediately after the spill to avoid any short circuit or corrosion. Turn your computer off by selecting "Shut Down" or "Turn Off" in the start menu, remove the battery and disconnect the power supply. Place paper towels on a table, turn the keyboard upside down and shake it over them to allow most of the liquid to fall down. Take a few clean paper towels and wipe the liquid off your keyboard's keys. To clean between the keys, you can also use cotton swabs with just a little bit of water. If the liquid which you spilled over your keyboard contained a high amount of sugar, such as soda or sugared coffee, you might have to remove some of your keyboard's keys to clean the surface under the keys with paper towels or swabs. You can do so by lifting them gently with a screwdriver or by using a key remover, which you can find in some IT stores. Wait at least 12 hours before using your keyboard again. If your computer is a laptop, wait the same length of time before turning it on again. My cat stepped on the keyboard and the screen went black, I don ot know what keys she pressed

try rebooting the computer and as soon as it begins to start up (before the windows screen shows) tap repeatedly on the "F8" key on the top of your keyboard. when a boot menu appears choose "safe mode" when the computer loads you will have the window default settings and you should see your screen. If this works simply reboot the computer and it will load to normal mode. If this does not work let me know and I will attempt to help you further

usb or ps2 keyboard ? might need to be enabled in BIOS

If you want to use a USB keyboard to access Windows command prompt options, make changes in the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System), or to operate legacy operating systems, you must enable support for the device inside the BIOS.

Shut down the computer and disconnect the USB keyboard. Connect a PS/2 keyboard to the PS/2 connector port on the rear of the computer. Turn on the computer and press the "Delete" key several times as soon as you see the initial boot or company logo screen. Wait for the main BIOS setup screen to appear. Press the right or left arrow keys to move the cursor to the "Advanced" or "Advanced Settings" menu option. Press the "Enter" key. Move the cursor to the "Integrated Peripherals" or "Peripheral Configuration" menu option. Press the "Enter" key. Press the down-arrow key to navigate to the "USB Controllers" option. Press the "+" or "-" key to change the menu option to "Enabled." Move the cursor to the "USB Legacy Support" or "USB Legacy Function" field. Press the "+" key repeatedly until the value option changes to "Enabled." Press the "F10" key to save changes to the BIOS settings and exit the setup utility. Wait until the computer begins to restart and then press the power button and hold it for approximately four or five seconds. The computer shuts down completely. Unplug the PS/2 keyboard from the computer and set it aside. Reconnect the USB keyboard restart the computer. As soon as you see the initial boot screen, tap the "Delete" key several times and wait for the BIOS setup screen to appear. If you are able to access the BIOS setup screen with the USB keyboard, USB support is active in the BIOS.

Acer aspire 5520 shut down after turned on for a few seconds

Hi Chritina,

I understand the frustration but this issue happens if the issue is with the hardware. It may be due to overheating of the computer, any hardware conflicts or malfunction, or may be due to Operating System corruption. Please try the below steps:

1. Keep on tapping F2 key on your computer keyboard as soon as you hit the power button.
2. Then press F9 key, press "Y" to confirm and then Press "F10" and press "Y" to confirm, the computer will restart.

It should take care of the issue, however, if the issue still persists, then follow the below mentioned steps:

You can restore the computer back to factory default,to do so, follow the below steps: Turn OFF the computer, now as soon as you hit the power button, keep on holding "Alt" key & keep on tapping "F10" key, i.e Alt+f10, it will open the recovery console, select full factory restore and follow onscreen instruction. NOTE: This will erase all the data on the computer.

However, if the issue still persists then the computer needs a Motherboard replacement, in that case you may need to contact Acer Technical support at 1 800 816 2237 and arrange a Depot Repair for the computer.

Thanks and regards,
Jitha

Acer Aspire 3680 laptop keyboard walked over by cat - now will not let me type - have cursor but no letters appear

Shut down the laptop and remove the battery . Now allow 15 minutes and then replace the battery back to boot again. If the PC does not respond with the keys, it must be checked if the cat had soiled the key pad and there is a short within.

My cat walked across my laptop and now I have lights on I don't think were there before and can't figure out what they mean. On the top of the keyboard there is a red light that keeps blinking on the far...

I can definitely help you but I need to know at least what the model of the laptop is. It is a gateway laptop right? it should have the model number on the bottom of the laptop. Are you using it now? I'd say the \'c\' sounds like caps lock but that doesn't appear to be the issue since you are typing in normal characters...

The cat definitely turned on a few things, the keys have multiple functions... hard to say what is what without the model of the laptop, but you should have a FUNCTION key or FN key... and then the keys themselves (such as KJHLKS) have multiple functions, usually written in the same color as the FN key... You can just play around with them and see what turns on what..

Let me know the model and I can be more specific,

Thanks
Tim

My display just turned sideways after the cat walked on my Microsoft Natural Ergonomic Keyboard 4000 and I can't figure out what key or keys she walked on. What key or keys will flip the display image back...

Don't worry about the keyboard, so it is Settings - Display.

support microsoft com

Or if you really want to show you are cleverer than the cat :>)

This is usually a function of your video adapter. Using the Ctrl key and/or the Alt key in conjunction with the arrow keys you should be able to rotate the display back. You may also try right clicking an empty space on your desktop and on the context menu look for Graphic Options, Graphic Properties, or something similar. Then look for Rotation or Orientation, or possibly Landscape and Portrait.

Keyboard Circuit Faulty?

Since all of the failing keys are on the right hand side, I'd try a short (maybe 15 minutes) soak in warm soapy water of the right hand 1/2 of the keyboard. While it is soaking, every few minutes try depressing the failing keys several time each. Follow this with a good rinse with warm water and a good drying. A hair drier will help to speed up the process. If that doesn't work, you'll probably need to find a replacement keyboard.
