Question about Sewing Machines
My sewing machine Riccar 555 SU keeps bunching up at the bottom Im used to singer machines Can anyone help I don't have a manual I just need to know the proper nob settings
1. Check the lower bobbin tension. Hang it from your finger and adjust until it will unwind about an inch when you bounce it up and down.
2. Ensure the bobbin carrier is inside the machine properly.
When proper and adjusted right you should notice the thread be pick up and move around the bobbin when you move the wheel with your hand. If it sticks then the small piece of metal w/screw located next to the bobbin carrier will need to be loosened and moved slightly away from the carrier. Another thing to check is the piece that is in the bobbin carrier is a pointed object that moves. Remove it and check the point if it is rough. If it is then use a piece of sandpaper to fix it. Try this test again.
3. Feel your top thread when it moves through the needle plate to see if their is a snag when going through it. If there is then you need to smoothen the hole with a finger nail file. Try this test again.
4. Make sure these all past the test or it sewing will be a problem. These things I've mentioned are really easy so let them sound hard.

when you have bunching on the bottom, you have a problem with the top thread: no tension. (and visa versa) Make sure the thread runs through the tension discs, these discs are activated when you put the presser foot down, so you want to thread the machine with the foot up, also feel if there no burrs, hooks, or whatever, so your top thread comes smooth off the spool, no jerking.

Here's a manual for the 551, it should be similar enough for your machine.
If not look on www.riccar.com/help/manuals for a similar model.
Find out what shank your machine is and you should be able to buy parts for it. I find ebay great for old sewing machine parts.
Hope this helps!
