Question about KitchenAid K45SS Classic Stand Mixer

1 Answer

My kitchen-aid stand mixer won't spin when turned off. When on and mixing, the motor starts to "dog", or slow down, when it's mixing something as easy as cookie dough.

The unit is only about 6-7 years old.

Hi Pam Toth, I want to help you with your problem, but I need more information from you. What speed are you trying to mix at? cookie dough shouldn't go above speed two, and if it does it could strip gears.

I only go on speed 2 when mixing, pretty much anything.

Remove the accessory cap at the front and see if there is any sign of debris or grindings in there. Occasionally the bush the accessory gear runs in can fail and bind up the gear.

Ok, I took the accessory cap off and it did look like there were little pieces of black residue in there. I stuck a kleenex in there and wiped, and it looks like it could be little pieces of metal.

  • Ross Keen Mar 23, 2014

If they felt a bit gritty then it probably is that gear binding in the bush. It it is bad enough the proper fix will be a new accessory gear and unfortunately a new top housing as the bush comes with the housing. If you do not have or use any accessories then another solution is to remove the top housing, punch that gear out (it punches to the inside) and assemble it without the gear. The beaters will work fine without that gear. A Kitchen Aid Service Agent will have seen it before and can help you out if you feel the job is too big or difficult.

Now that I know what the solution could be, I have a friend that could probably fix it if I were able to get the parts. I don't know what parts cost, but maybe cheaper to get a new one? I don't know. What would cause this? I do use the grinder attachment, so I would need to get it fixed.

If you have a friend that can do it for you get him to have a look at the area I have suggested. Here in NZ the repair is certainly worthwhile but the current version of that mixer sells here for NZ$900 approx. The cause is a lubrication failure in the bush that the gear runs in.

I appreciate your help! I will check into the parts and see what can be done. Thanks so much!

If the motor itself is slowing down, that is one thing. However, if you mean by "dog" that there is what sounds as if a gear is slipping then the solution is straight forward. The worm (follower) gear needs to be replaced.

There are videos on the net which show how to do this and the Service Manual can be found at:

SOURCE: Food made with KitchenAid Stand mixer tastes like grease

The k-aid stand mixers do have a tendency to seep oil.
That oil started out as grease but has separated and is probably coming out from around the beater shaft.

Usually just wiping shaft off with a paper towel right before using is sufficient.

Also -the more frequently the mixer is used, the less likely the tendency of the grease to separate.

Some of the gears may have broken or slipped off. You'll need t open it up to see why the shaft from the motor will not spin or you will burn out the motor with the power on trying to make it go. It might be a DIY job if you can see an obvious problem like a slipped gear, otherwise take it to a repair specialist.

SOURCE: is 300 w mixer powerful enough to mix bread dough?

Your mixer is easily able to handle the kneading of bread dough. Please advise:

9 cups of all purpose white flour, maximum.

6 cups of specialty flour, maximum. This is any flour besides all purpose white.

Bread doughs are only to be needed on speed 2, and never for longer than 7 minutes.

This is all stated in the Use and Care guide for the mixer itself. If these guidelines are not followed, it may lead to a product failure.

Kitchen mixer brush repair and yearly maintenance.

If your unit has not been serviced in a while, or never, you could have one or more problems. 1'st watch the armature through the slots at the rear of the unit. This is where the brushes are. While operating the unit see if they are arcing serverely. If so you will need to replace them. You should be able to get them at Replacement should be straight forward. Lay it on it's side. Remove all screws holding the case on. Removing the brushes is different on every unit but the procedure should be obvious. Inspect the armature for grooves and wear. You may have to get a new armature also. If the armature is not too bad using crocus cloth (very fine sandpaper on cloth, it comes in a roll, available at Lowe's) smooth out the armature before replacing the brushes. While you have it apart clean any old grease and dirt out of it. Lubricate the bushings on the ends of the shaft with light machine oil such as 3-in-one. Wipe up any excess. If your unit has a gear reduction and it is accessable lubricate it with light grease, do not overdo it, you only need a small amount. Reassemble the unit and you should be good to go. To keep your unit running it's best you should perform the lubrication/cleaning procedure every year.

The repair could be as simple as replacing the speed control switch but given the lack of response from KitchenAid you might not be able to obtain a replacement switch. Eight years can be a lifetime in appliance years.

13 years is a very good sevice life of a microwave. the part that heats, the "magnetron" is usally the first part to quit, they usally just quit heating first. but it sounds like the circuits in yours have gave out. these days microwaves are relatively cheap so its easyier to replace than try to have fixed, hope this helps

Question regarding KitchAid mixer, Model K45ss. excessive noise.

Maeveda, Congratulations on your 30 year old KA mixer! Was it a wedding present? Do you still have the K45SS Parts List? If not, you can download a PDF version from the KA website. Click on Customer Care>Locate Manuals & Guides> Enter the 6 character model number (in your case, use K45SSW select Parts List (1) and then check to see it this matches your mixer). You can check on page 4 & 5 for the disassembly and reassembly of your mixer, along with all the parts. It will be messy but gratifying. Once apart you can check for any other unseemly wear and tear on the gears, etc.
As far as parts go, here are four potential vendors in no particular order:;;; (this vendor the best prices for my wife mixer's parts, but sadly they had to back order them, which was disappointing to SWMBO). Prices for the same part vary widely between vendors, so do your comparison shopping. Here's a link to a site that details the disassembly and replacement of a mixer's grease, which might be helpful, too.
Good luck and have fun. I hope this helps. Howard, Burke, VA

well Kevin your mixer is indeed old and the parts for it are most likely no longer available. I would first visually inspect and wiring in the unit. if this seems okay, it could be that your field winding is gone or the worm gear inside that drives the unit is simply burnt out. hope this helps.

Hobart A200T General Info / Back cover plate gasket

I'm a service tech for hobart,I'll type your serial number into our database and see what it brings up.The changes that have been made---older units use a mechanical start switch on the motor, the new units use an electronic start switch.the old units center shaft and gears have changed.the older units dont have bowl guards and the new units do.(this is a cage that goes around the bowl). The gasket that your talking about is just that--a thin paper. The paper wears and you get that symptom you describe and its normal.I'll get back to you.

Old hobart s-30 mixer oil

man you got an oldie but goodie mixer!im a hobart service tech for 8 years and have only seen about two dozen, unfortuantly parts for these units are for the sight glass they do become cloudy over time and you cant determine the oil level.use a heavy gear case oil.the only way of telling is to drain the oil or if the unit is loud you should probably cange the oil.
