After you tried all of the suggested "fixes", contact Brother to see if there's a download that might address this issue.

SOURCE: paper feedin

The price of labor and repair parts could exceed the cost of a new printer in some cases. This most likely wouldn't be something you might be able to repair yourself. I would call the authorized repair center in your area and ask about a quote on what it might cost to repair this printer.

SOURCE: MFC -9420 CN Printer/Fax Scanner

I've seen this before...

The machine is calling for legal sized paper and it thinks it has it in the paper tray. Check the back stop that is inside the paper tray. It should be a green guide that is closest to you if you pull the tray out. You may have to lift up a flap on the end. Make sure that the paper stop is on the correct paper size for what is in the tray. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need any more assistance.

If this helps you please rate it as Fixya!

SOURCE: when recieving fax machine says

The message "Wrong Paper Size" will appear on your Brother machine's display if the paper you have loaded does not match the Paper Size setting programmed in your Brother machine or the driver settings, or if the paper is oriented incorrectly in the tray.

If the message "Wrong Paper Size" is appearing :

PROCEDURE ?: Print from the Windows® PC or Macintosh®

To resolve this issue complete the following steps:
  1. In order to clear the message from the LCD, you will need to empty the jobs from the print queue. Complete the following steps:

    For Windows® Users:
    1. Windows®2000 Users:
Left click Start -> Settings -> Printers (and Faxes)

      Windows®XP Users:
Left click Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel -> Printers (and Faxes) or Printers and Other Hardware.

      Windows®Vista Users:
Left click Start -> (Settings) -> Control Panel -> Hardware an Sound -> Printers (and Faxes).

    2. Right Click on the Brother driver and select Cancel All Documents(or Purge Print Documents). You may have to make several attempts to completely purge the print queue.

    For Macintosh® Users:
    1. Click the print icon in the Dock.
    2. Select the document and click delete. Repeat this process and delete all documents.

  2. Press Stop/Exit if your Brother machine still displays the error message.
  3. Verify the paper settings for your document:
Depending on your application, the steps for setting the document's paper size will vary. From many applications, this setting can be accessed trough the File -> Page Setup -> Paper Size menu. Please refer to your software's documentation for instructions on how to adjust this setting.
  4. Make sure the correct size paper is inserted in the tray you are printing from, and the paper guides are adjusted to fit the paper length and width of the paper.
  5. When printing, you can often access the printer driver's properties.

    For Windows® Users:
The steps for accessing these settings, differ depending on you're application. From many applications clicking Properties or Preferences within the print dialog box can access this setting.

    For Macintosh® Users:
    1. Select Print Settings in the Print dialog box.
    2. Within the printing preferences window or Print dialog box adjust the following settings:
      1. Media Type: Select the media type to print on. The machine changes the way it places dots depending on the selected media type. For the best print results, make sure to select the correct media type.
      2. Paper Size: This Printer Driver lets you select the size of paper and envelops and also allows user defined sizes of paper.

PROCEDURE ?: Print copies or faxes (only MFC users)

To clear the "Wrong Paper Size" message you must do one of the following:

Loading the paper into the tray correctly

Paper should be loaded in the paper trays in portrait orientation. Do NOT load paper in the paper trays in landscape orientation.
Regardless of the paper size you are using, you must always load the paper into the paper tray so that the two longer edges of the paper face the left and right sides of the paper tray and the two shorter edges of the paper face the front and back of the paper tray.

Thanks

Problem with Brother MFC-9420CN

This happened on my MFC-9420CN. It turns out the there are blue tabs inside the paper tray that hold the paper in place. If the tabs are not touching the paper, you'll get this "Check Paper Size" error. The printer thinks that you have loaded a different paper tray.

Try this first..... Some faxes can be configured for different paper sizes for timing of the preinting process. This would be either tabs on the back of the paper drawer of a soft setting found in the owners manual.
