It would seem data (specifically a high level driver causing normal boot to fail) is corrupted on your hard drive. This could be because the Hard drive has developed a problem, likely causing bad sectors. It is time to backup anything important by any means available USB or anything that works in safe mode or DOS. As a technician I would take the HDD out of that computer and put it in another, backing up the data on it to the host computers HDD. As it is usually the fastest most efficient way to obtain as much as possible before full failure occurs. If you can't figure out a way to obtain the data yourself I would contact a technician asap.

Must say I am impressed with your speedy response andi interest. On doing a disk refrag through windows maintance it returns DEFRAG detects protection fault in MODULE KRNL 386. EXE @ 0001 0000./c 36 HH caused page fault KERNEL 32.DLL @015f : bff9dba 7. Now that means nothing to me is this the problem?

It means the data it is trying to move did not read back the same. If a scan disk will not complete and considering its age I would probably write it off.

Its been a long long time, but i believe windows98 protection shutdowns were to prevent failures from destroying user data. They usually occured only with very bad driver problems or hardware problems. Starting is DOS you could try the System file checker.

sfc /scannow

Your floppy drive should actually be working fine in safe mode, its possible that your floppy drive is at fault or your motherboard even.

If you know your way around the inside of a computer, removing or just unplugging the floppy drive (and it is the problem) will likely allow the computer to boot. If your motherboard is at fault it's not likely too boot and you're much much closer to knowing whats actually wrong.

SOURCE: windows. file missing or corrupt system32 config

If you're running XP, boot to the XP cd, if available (if not, mail me and I can send you a dell XP disc)
Pass the first repair opportunity, press f8, then it should allow you to do a windows repair. Do that. You will keep all your files, but windows will be completely reloaded. Will need to get updates, but that's it.
Good luck

0x8007045d error the request could not be preformed because of an I/O device error

I'd suggest you to connect your external hard drive to a different USB port and try copying and check if that fixes the issue.

Also, boot into safe mode and try copying the same and check if you can successfully complete the copy operation without any errors.

Refer the below link for more details on how to start computer in safe mode:

Start your computer in safe mode
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Start-your-computer-in-safe-mode

If you're able to successfully copy the file in safe mode, it indicates that one of the third party application or start up item is causing the error.

You could put your system in clean boot state and check if any third party application or any services is causing the issue and hence the error.

Putting your system in clean boot state helps in identifying if any third party applications or startup items are causing the issue. If yes, you may go ahead and disable or uninstall the same.

Follow the below steps to put your computer in clean boot state:

1. Log on to the computer by using an account that has administrator rights.
2. Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER to start the System Configuration Utility. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
3. On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear the Load startup items check box. (The Use Original Boot.ini check box is unavailable.)
4. On the Services tab, click to select the Hide all Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all.
5. Click OK, and then click Restart.

Once the system is in clean boot state, try to copy the files and check if you're able to copy files without any errors.

Refer the link below for more details:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

After you have finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

1. Click Start, type msconfig.exe in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click Continue.
2. On the General tab, click the Normal Startup option, and then click OK.
3. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click Restart.

RCINT FAILURE STRING TABLE ID NOT FOUND "46" AT LINE 236 problem on my pc

Try running system file checker. It scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.
Start, Run, "SFC /scannow"
The error you're referring to is most often caused by pieces of software, such as LogonStudio, replacing system files.

Problems loading OS in Gateway desktop

Normally installing the os on a different mechine, and then putting into another pc dosent work.

If the hardrive is the oringinal drive, which came with the system, and you want to install xp on, you will have to use a dos disk with fdisk on it, delete all partitions on the drive and create a new partition, then start loading windows, it will give you the option to format the drive for nt(ntfs) file system and setup windows.

If you do that and it still gives you protecting files error, you will have to take the side panel of the computer tower, unplug from the mains and take the cmos battery out for about 30 secs, put the battery back in, plug in the mains and reboot the computer, start loading windows again
Hope this helps and post back if you need further assistance.

Xppro on startup box appears with ref to Twonkymedia startup application error

A program that contained Twonkymedia was probably deleted. Even though it was deleted a reference remains in the start up files and when start up files are executed it can not find the program to start it thus "start up application error". To get rid of the error message you can remove the reference to the program in the start up menu or reinstall the program and let it execute normally on start up.

Error - Kernel32.dll

Microsoft defines Kernel32 errors as follows: "The Kernel32.dll file is a 32-bit dynamic link library file that is found in Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows Millenium Edition (Me). The Kernel32.dll file handles memory management, input/output operations, and interrupts. When you start Windows, Kernel32.dll is loaded into a protected memory space so that other programs do not take over that memory space. On occasion, you may receive an invalid page fault (IPF) error message. This error message occurs when a program tries to access the Kernel32.dll protected memory space. Occasionally, the error message is caused by one particular program, and other times the error message is provoked by multiple files and programs."
