Question about HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j020US E0M22UA 15.6" LED Notebook - AMD A-Series

1 Answer

It all started when my desktop went completely BLANK. No icons, no background, everything had to be done with SEARCH. Slowly tried to recuperate what I could. Taskbar is visible but not useful. Usuall

Laptop is "breathing" LOUDER than usual or fans are spinning faster than usual (that's how we say it in spanish, don't know the term for it in english)which is causing the battery to drain quickly. I haven't updated the antivirus yet, and the laptop came with Windows 8, but I updated it to 8.1. I've been watching shows on the laptop. Few threats have been detected of a harmful website or pop ups. (everything I watch is PG, don't get any ideas) And once the mouse on laptop stopped working with the "two finger scroll".

Blank screen

A white blank screen? That sounds like the virus changed your display settings. Click Ctrl+Alt+Del to get to the task manager. Press and hold the Ctrl key plus the Alt Key then hit the Del key. When the task manager opens up Click File at the upper left corner of the window then select New Task RUN. When the create New Task Window opens type: explorer.exe and hit OK. See if it starts populating your desktop icons and shows the start menu and task bar. If so, the virus changed your settings.

To change your display background click Start/Control Panel and look for Display or Appearance and Personalization. When it opens select the Desktop tab and change the desktop background. Hopefully the white will go away.

You may have to get into Safe Mode to do the above if the virus disabled the Task Manager.

2 MIN ICON ON WELCOME SCREEN ACER

My dad fixed this problem by changing the background on his computer. I know this sounds like a strange fix, but apparently certain backgrounds just affect the load time and I think that's what this "2 min" icon was representing. His icon has now disappeared.

What you should try at this point is shut everything down, Unplug your desktop, hook it back up to tour moniter and boot. If you now get a picture, go to your device manger and click on display adaptors. If you have more than one selection. choose your monitor. Let me know if this works.

How do i set a photo as desktop background? cannot find desktop properties...

  1. You can right click on the picture itself and select "set as Desktop background"

  2. Or:

  3. Click on the Start menu button. Then click on Settings and then on Control Panel.

  4. Double-click on the Display icon or text link. This will open a window named Display Properties.

  5. Click on Background if that tab is not selected. Click on one of the items that appear in the box labeled Wallpaper.

  6. Inspect the preview that appears above the Wallpaper menubox. Use the Display menu to the right to experiment with tiling, stretching or centering the picture that you are previewing.

  7. Click on Browse to use an image stored elsewhere on your hard drive. Locate the image and click Open.

  8. Click OK to change your background, or wallpaper. Click Cancel if you decide to maintain your current settings.

When switching on PC it does not boot up fully

Hi Craig

From what you are descrbing one of the background services is preventing start up from completing

Please try the following

1) Switch on PC
2) Continuoulsy press the F8 key until a start menu is presented, choose safe mode from this menu
3) Once safe mode has loaded up go to Start>Programs>Systems Tools>System Restore
4) From the system restore menu choose 'restore my computer to a earlier time'
5) From the calendar presented choose a date in bold when this fault wasnt happening and then click on next and follow the screen through
6) Let the system restore complete and it will automatically reboot and take you back to the mains windows screen
7) This should hopefully let the hung service be able to run

I hope this has been useful

The desktop is empty

First a question; you say you only have the background and cursor does that mean literally everything else is gone including the start button in the lower left and the task manager in the lower right? Or do you mean that all your icons, shortcuts, folders and files you had on your desktop are gone?
