I'm Confused about Dual-Channel, How to Activate/Enable it?

Hello, i'm confused about this dual-channel, that most people said it'll boost your performances. Currently, memory that i'm using it are Kingston 2gb Sodimm Module PC2-6400 DDR 2 & Kingston 1gb Sodimm Module PC-2 5300 DDR 2, on my Asus G1 (Notebook). But, will the Dual-Channel work with mine specs? Some said it must using a same Brand, Size, and frequencies RAM, whatever i don't really know about that thing.. Please, I need some suggestions and solution from you guys. I would appreciate it a lot..

    only 2 slots. a regular notebook. yeah, i thought by just using a same brand will activate it. So, what would you suggest? Should i took another 6400 or 5300? and the capacity should same too? i don't even really know about it.

Check your user manual for the type of memory you can use. If your computer could use dual channel memory, I think it would come that way. Dual Channel is a pair of special compatable memory modules and only come in pairs. To buy two unpaired memory modules and hope to run them as Dual Channel is wishing too much. If they work, you're lucky, but most likely they will not work as dual channel.

If you are using those two different memory modules and they both work for a total of 3 GB then you can not do much better.

How many memory slots are in your Asus G1 notebook?

    I just checked the ASUS web site and the G1 has two standard sockets, not a pair of Dual Sockets. The socket type is as important as the ram type. If you do not have Dual sockets, (which you do not) adding dual socket ram will not make the ram act as dual socket. THey will be treated as standard ram. As far as I know, there is no way you computer can be made Dual Socket. If you want to get the advantage of maximum ram, buy another stick of "Kingston 2gb Sodimm Module PC2-6400 DDR 2". Then your ram will be compatable and maxed out.

    Honestly, I think the cost will be more than any benefit you will get. Go with what you have. It should be plenty powerful as it is.

Asus P8Z77-V Deluxe motherboard problem..Ram will only fit in single slots..e.g slots 1 and 2..Not dual channel.Will not boot as dual channel..Getting a Q-Code..55 Error reading....Meaning that memory is...

Get a second set of dual channel RAM from somewhere and test it in the slots and see if it still gives you the same error code. But most likely it will and you'll need to RMA the motherboard as the RAM slots are most likely BAD.

Can you tell me what is the difference in performance without having Dual-Channel working as it should,compared to my present situation meening NO DUAL-CHANNEL working??

Dual channel means two channels of memory. there are two configurations you can use. you can use single channel method which has twoo ram sticks running on one channel or you can have a seperate channel for each ram stick. Dual channel is said to be the better way to run it because it increases speed of the ram. Now assuming you have 4 slots for ram. to use dual channel you have to run 2 sticks of the same value (MB) right next to each other. You cannot run 2 sticks of different values in dual channel mode. In the case that you do the sticks would pair together on a single channel. Hope this helps you better understand.

Hi,

You must be using a USB keyboard. I suggest switch back to PS2 keyboard. Moreover, the system board supports dual channel so you should be using matched pairs plus placing them in the correct slots to enable dual channel mode.
Try this and it should work without any trouble.

I'm doing a memory upgrade. i have four memory slots, 2 blue and 2 black. i have two, 2g dimms; for dual channel operation do i use the 2 blue slots or the first blue slot and the first black...

Try them in the same-colored slots, nearest the processor. It seems ASUS (who makes your mobo) has chosen to color code their slots so those of the same color enable dual-channel. If you can't tell from the BIOS detection, try CPU-Z to verify that the memory is in the correct slots for dual-channel operation. Putting one in the wrong slot should not damage anything. It would just make it so you can't take advantage of the extra speed.

Memory confusion different readings

It sounds like something isnt working right, what operating system are you using, Vista? I would take out the original 512 and see what it says after, often ram isnt compatible if it is too different in size and speeds. Also, if your motherboard supports dual channel ram and you have the extra 512 chip it wont run in dual channel mode, you would run better with just the 2 chips then the added 512 chip.

Memory channel mode

Hi shinde32, you should know that dual channel memory should be bought as a pair. Your board has two DIMM slots as you mentioned. The board can handle up to 2GB max memory, as you have mentioned. What you do not seem to know is it is required to use the same amount of memory is each slot. See the bottom of page 55 in your manual. (Do you need the manual)? Download at this link;
http://download.intel.com/support/motherboards/desktop/d102ggc2/sb/d4798502_en.pdf
There is not a bios setting where you can enable or disable memory channels. The bios configures the memory automatically. Intel has a list of memory tested & passed for the D102GGC2 Mb. You can see that list at this next link.
http://www.intel.com/technology/memory/ddr/valid/DDR2_sodimm_results.htm
Bottom line, both DIMM slots should have two 512MB DIMMS or two 1GB DIMM's. (Like this memory);
http://www.bzboyz.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProdID=18112

https://www.thefind.com/computers/info-spd-dual-channel-kit-memory
This is what your search would look like,
"1GB x 2 DDR2 dual channel 533MHz SPD memory".
The Certified "SPD" is important for Intel MB's.

Good luck shinde32!

Why does my comp didn't run Dual channel ?

Go into your BIOS and activate dual channel mode.

please also note that several motherboard required you to put the modules in certain slot configuration (such as in slot 1 and 3 or 2 and 4) but if you got only 2 slot then forget about this slot configuration.
