Question about Sony VPL CS1 Multimedia Projector

1 Answer

Both the LAMP/COVER and FAN/TEMP indicator lights come on, not blinking

Have been using this projector for several years on the road. Unit has worked flawlessly. Suddenly both the LAMP/COVER and FAN/TEMP indicator lights came on, not blinking. Replaced bulb, worked fine ONCE, then, on next boot-up, same thing... both the LAMP/COVER and FAN/TEMP indicator lights came on, not blinking. I went through reset operation when bulb replaced, and have removed/replaced bulb again with same symptoms. Any help?

With both lights solid. according to the manual all it says is (there is an electrical failure inside the unit, please take to an authorized servicer). if you are able to do this yourself you will need the schematics and a voltmeter to start testing your voltages. your lamp is fine so dont waste your money replacing that anymore. if you would like the service manual send me an email to

Red power, blinking red temp

if the Lamp error and Temperature error lights are flashing red this means that there are two separate errors.

  • A flashing lamp light means the lamp failed to ignite. It could be a lamp driver problem or lamp failure. Replace the lamp to resolve the issue. If the issue is not resolved, then service the projector.
  • A flashing Temperature light signals a fan error. Turn the projector off and allow it to cool down. If the light is still flashing after the projector is turned back on, service the projector.

Replace the 2 bulbs. Unit powered up correctly and turned on like normal. Then Lamp1 and Lamp 2 indicator lights blinked (Indicating Start UP). After some period of time, it switched to Red 6 times blink...

1 red blink every 2.5 seconds indicates a cover error-- for this check the lamp cover
2 times red blinks very 2 seconds indicates temperature error. for this let the projector cool off check filters and fans that there is no blockage of air for proper cool down
3 red blinks every every 2 seconds Power error. incorrect voltage input or internal malfunction.
4 red blinks every 2 seconds indicates Fan Error check the fans make sure they are working and not blocked or need replacing.
i have nothing on 6 ligths go ahead reconect and check for proper count. hope this information helps.
Best of Luck.

Lamp goes off and on.

This sounds more like a heat thing to me rather than a lamp problem. Is there any indication (blinking light?) when the unit shuts down? I would expect to see a temp light blinking or on.

Try cleaning the fan area and verify that the air filter is clean as well.

Update this with what you find.

All projectors are cooled by the use of a fan. The light chamber has its owned fan to extract the excessive heat generated by lamp. Check to see if this fan, close to the fan is operating.

Both Temp and Lamp lights blink red

All you should need to do is go to the menu on the projector, and find the Filter Timer. Hit the right arrow to select the filter time, and then hold the rest button on the projector until you are prompted to confirm the reset. Hit menu to confirm and it should now reset the filter timer. Now cut the projector off and back on and the lights should stop blinking. I hope this helps.

Lamp will not strike error message

this can sometimes indicate either an overheating issue, a lamp service life problem, or that the cover to the lamp housing has not been secured properly.

Wont start up

Pls clean the filters and check the lamp by opening the lamp cover. If lamp looks okay in all aspects then send the projector to any engineer to check the ballast unit of the lamp.
