I have a poulan push mower that when it starts the throttle goes up and down at any speed can this be adjusted out with the govenor spring?

This problem is usually caused by the diaphragm unit needing replaced underneath the carburetor. I'm guessing you have the Briggs engine with the (plastic) carb directly on top of the gas tank and no float bowl on the carb. You remove the tank and carb as one unit (being careful to note the spring/linkage hookups). Then remove the 5 screws that hold the carb to the tank. Then remove the gasket and diaphragm that is between the two. The replacement kit will cost you about $4 USD. Be careful! there is also a spring under there. Don't lose it and make a note of it's placement. A pinhole or a weak diaphragm is usually what makes these engines 'surge'. Hope this helps and best of luck to you.If you decide to do this repair yourself, be sure to clean all the little holes and indents and the carb itself with carb cleaner too, but don't spray it on the gaskets.

Bike turns over but wont start.

The problem with a bike sitting around is that the inside of the tank rusts and the gas drys up leaving a very unwanted residue of varnish in the carbs. The repair is going to be a bit of a project and very frustrating.

Remove and drain the gas tank. Remove the old petcock. Clean the rust out inside of the tank as best you can. Install the new petcock AND install an inline fuel filter.

Next, remove the carbs and disassemble for cleaning. I would spring for carb rebuild kits but only if it looks like the carbs can be saved. Often, abused carbs just need to be trashed and replaced. If you have never balanced and syncronised four carbs you are in for a very frustrating day. I am serious here > keep a fire extinguisher handy.

It's likely that the cost of fixing the bike will be more than the bike is worth, especially if you pay the dealer to do the repair. Your bike is 27 years old and most dealers will not work on anything more than 10 to 15 years old. Parts availability is a problem as well. Even if you get it running, what shape is the gearbox in? Are any of the shift forks bent? Is the clutch operational? This bike is a total shot in the dark and a risky investment at best.

I hate to be the person to tell the bad news but I would hate it more to see you put money and time into lost cause. I have the tools and experiance to fix bikes > I wouldn't want to touch this one. Best wishes anyway.

Please rate this solution as a "FixYa" to the problem if you feel I have answered your question adiquately.

1988 jeep wrangler carb trouble

Ok... If you have any experience with carbs, you can get a rebuild kit. The most important part of any rebuild is to clean out obstructions in the passageways. Most times this can be done by using carb cleaner and spraying compressed air through them. Most times, just spraying cleaner into carb while installed is a waste of time as debris usually consists mainly of fine rust particles from inside the fuel tank, which will remain in the fuel bowl unless physically removed. If you can't do this, next best option is to search local junkyards for a similar unit. When replacing, cut the fuel line in a convenient place ahead of the carb inlet and put an aftermarket filter in the line, to prevent debris from re-entering and causing further problems. Most carbs have the adjustments blocked off. before using, it is wise to have someone who knows how to remove those plugs, do this for you so you can adjust it after installed.
Good luck
